IF they ask you to pay money to start your at Home business does that mean it is a scam?

I gave Diva, Patty and Mayukoy a thumbs up. Like Diva, I am too shocked by some of the answers here. Home based business (that's what they are a business not jobs) If it were a job where you work for someone else, then it could be a scam if they were asking for money. People do get them confused, and I think that's what's going on here. Diva is right, any business (home based or traditional) there is going to be a start up cost. Most home based businesses cost under $500. Depending on what it is and what you do. Here's a few things to look at when getting involved in a home based business to make sure it's right for you.
Our (my wife and myself) list of questions to ask, or find out on. Using our business as an example, take a look at the questions, what we found and do the search for this business that your looking into getting involved.
1. How long have they been in business? We checked records to see how long our company was around, at the time it was nine years old and now it's 15. Do you know when they started? This goes along with what Diva was suggesting.
2. Are they registered with the BBB. Ours is registered. Although there's things with the BBB that you need to understand. I'll explain at the end.
3. Who's involved with the company? Like in ours Donald Trump, Robert Kiyosaki and others have endorsed our company and use our products. Check to see if anyone has endorsed this company, if they use the products and/or services that your going to supply. Also, meet with the co-founders of this company. We've personally met our co-founders and found from our first meeting that they were incredible people with incredible visions. What are the visions of the co-founders of this organization? Get a feel for what they're about.
4. What is the compensation plan now, and what was it like before. We checked with the records in our business and found that in over the years, the compensation plan had only gotten better each year. As long as we've been involved, we've now witnessed the compensation plan always increasing. Check the history on yours.
5.Have they been featured in magazine's? For instance our company has been featured in several magazines Like Success, Fortune, USA Today etc. Check to see if they have. You can get a lot of information on the company by reading about them through different magazines.
6. Has Inc 500 rated them? This magazine rated our company the 22nd fastest growing company in revenue in it's first 5 years. Inc 500 shows the top 500 businesses in revenue growth. Check to see what Inc 500 rated the company your looking at. If they are listed, then you'll know that the company is pretty solid.
7. Do they have a physical address that you can go to? Check for an address not just a P.O. Box
8. Where are their headquarters? Our world headquarters is in Farmington Hills Michigan, Personally been there, (If your here in the states) Other headquarters in different countries. and US headquarters in Charlotte. We went to Farmington Hills Michigan where our world Head Quarters are. If there's a physical address, go check it out. Meet the people there, since you will be on the phone with them here and there. Get a feel for the Integrity, professionalism etc of this company like we did ours.
9. What does the start up cost take care of? In my business the company takes care of all the billing for my customers, Inventory, Customer services, Order Entry, Employees, workman's comp, Cross referencing, Licensing, Insurance, paperwork, accounts payables, accounts receivables etc. Find out what your start up cost covers.
10. What is the product and service you would be selling.
Is the product and service in high demand and real? For instance we offer services that people are already using every day and paying for anyway, but at a lower cost. Things like Local and Long distance telephone services, Internet, video phones, digital phones, cellular phones through all the major cellular providers. We make a percentage every single month they pay their bills. This is just one way we make money. Everyone uses them and everyone pays for them. When money gets tight, would they keep your service or be able to run to the store and be able to purchase them on sale? Leaving you to have to wait until they run out of what they just purchased, or wait until their finances get settled? This is what I mean by high demand. Is the product your going to be offering to people in high demand, or is it going to be hard to sale? Even if it's harder to sale, doesn't mean you can't succeed. You just need to figure out away where people are going to want it and buy it. You can succeed with just about any product and service, some will be harder then others.
I want to clarify this accusation on pyramids with home based business. I do have to laugh at people calling things pyramid's. Because I really hope they don't work for anyone or have anyone work for them! If you think about it, the American business model is built like a Pyramid! Welcome to Corporate America! Get a peice of paper out. Take any corporation to use as an example. On the top of your paper, draw a circle. This circle represents the Owner or partnership owners, Then write two circles under that (President/ CEO) and the Vice President. Write a few more circles under that and you have corporate management positions. A few circles under that and you have store managers, a few circles under that and you have store department managers, a few circles under that and you have sales reps. People don't realize that but unless it's a one man show no hired help, no independent representatives, everyone works in a pyramid! They can slice and dice in anyway they want, but it is what it is! The little sales people at the bottom feed all the people above them. In Most home based businesses, it doesn't always work this way. The people who have had their own business longer, will obviously make more money because they have more customers. You do the math, I've had my business for over six years. If someone comes into this business today, do you think they'll have over 5,000 customers within a week even? So yeah, I'm going to make more money then someone just starting their business. But you know, they could very well have more customers then me in a short amount of time and make more then me if they really work hard and fast. So what people say about them only feeding the upper organizations is false. The income I make, doesn't come from anyone else. So don't read into people's lies.
Another thing, as I mentioned about the BBB, You can't beleive advertisements or blogs (if a business is new it wouldn't be posted on a blog, BBB reports or rip off report or any place like that as of yet. In time it will as soon as people start not getting their way on different issues) When researching a business to get involved in, Don't go to blogs because they don't distinguish if a business is legit, real or not. Blogs are places that negative people go to only to vent their flustrations on something that did not work for them. Usually these people are the ones who did not do what was needed to succeed in business because they didn't put the time or effort needed to succeed, or do what other's who "have" succeeded in that particular industry had advised them to do. They didn't follow the advice thoughrly *excuse the spelling, spell check isn't working for some reason* Anyhow, these blogs people go and post all these negative things that are 80 percent false accusations. They can't fess up to the fact of the "real" reason why they failed in business. Instead of standing up and admitting to what they really did or did not do, they try and pass the buck onto someone or something else to try and justify their failure by calling the company they were involved in a scam. Basically to make them feel better and lure people away from what could of been a big time opportunity for them to do something with their lives. That's what blogs are basically about. So when searching for a business for yourself, look for yourself, not anyone else's. Talk to the people who are involved in the company "now" not then. The ones involved then and not now are failures that are only going to give you negative feed back and take it away from you. Which isn't right. You need to be a leader not a follower. If your a follower of negative impact, your going to fail! That's not what you want to do. Businesses take time to build. The average time to build a business is anywhere from 2 to 5 years. Depending on how much work and effort you put into it. Most people quit under 3, because they gave up on what they could of had because the income wasn't what they wanted it to be or they realized that they were going to actually have to work a bit and not get handed down money for doing nothing. Instead of working their business and acheive what they wanted in whatever time frame it took, they throw there hands up in the air and quit, or get too much negative feed back from others just out to destroy their dream, then they quit and turn around and go along with what everyone else says and call it a scam or a fake or whatever. Don't let these people pull you into their lifestyle. They're unhappy people who didn't have what it took to succeed, not did they take the time and real effort into "building" a business.
I don't know what business your looking into, so I can't really help much further then what I've stated. If the business has a real product and service your offering, the model makes since to you, you like the product/service your offering, then don't listen to anyone's B.S. and collaborate with that company and give it your all. I thought all home business is scam, but it was not true.
For example, one black man raped japanese woman in Okinawa, then japanese people though ALL BLACK PEOPLE IS BAD! And they tried to make all black people to leave from Okinawa. But I have black friends, and they are all nice.

This is the same with home business

If this is scam, Why Robert Kiyosaki who wrote book "Poor dad and Rich dad" joined home business????
He joined our team last year.

Our company, Xango was chosen as one of top best company last year! And Robert Kiyosaki loved our system. I was skeptical at first, but I found out why top entrepreneur is attracted with the company. Xango ranked 4th within just 4 years. And it is growning faster than microsoft. If you miss this opportunity, you will regret it in the future!!

Wow, I'm shocked at the answers here! Okay, obviously there are a few things that are not understood about the business world here and I'd like to speak to that.

So you know, I am an international home business trainer and it's in my profile if you'd like to know more, so, let's address some facts shall we?

First off, pyramids are illegal and any business that is running one will not survive long. So if you think that the business you are looking at is a pyramid, then check out how long they've been operating for. If they have a long history behind them then no, they're probably valid and not a pyramid.

Now, to clarify what a Pyramid or Ponzi scheme as they are also called is, it is where there is no valuable product sold to an end use consumer. If the business has a product that is being sold, be it on-line or not, then they are just like any other traditional business.

There are many MLM's, meaning Multi Level Marketing businesses out there and that is legal, such as Mary Kay and Herbal Life just to name an example. Some of them are good, some of them are not so good and some of them are scams so yes, be careful but there are many that aren't scams and are in fact, incredible opportunities. You'll want to use your power of discernment, check out everything thoroughly before you commit to anything. Make sure that it would be a good fit for you all the way around.

Lastly, all businesses, I don't care what kind of business it is, will have a start up cost. Nobody gets a business for free unless it's been willed to them. Some have huge start up costs, some can be fired up with minimal expense so find something that is within your budget so that you have a greater chance of success.

I hope this helps? Feel free to contact me if you have further questions.

With home businesses this a common scam.

Just because a Home Business opportunity has a start up cost does not mean it is a scam. There are many legitimate home based businesses out there. You should thoroughly check out any business before signing anything. Check them out with the BBB.

I have been involved with a home based business since 2004 and my start up was less than $50.

If you would like to know more about the business I am in they I ask that you take a moment to go here: www.gourmetcandlecafe.com

Best wishes to you!

Chances are you have been conned into an online pyramid scheme. Look up Pyramid Schemes, they claim that you will be making money working from home and don't tell you later that you will be ending up spending more money that you will receive it.

Quit now and spare yourself one. ;) It happened to me too.

Gregosi
Some of them are, but you just have to do your own research. Go to www.iboplus.org

Yes - it's a scam! Don't do anything that requires you to pay beforehand. All they end up doing is sending you a book on how to start business. SCAM SCAM SCAM

Well most likely it is a scam...but is it guaranteed? I started a home business for 29.00 and it is not a scam I love it...and it was refundable for 4 months if you didn't like what you were doing. So I guess look into it and find out why they want you to pay money to get started. If it is refundable I don't see why you can't see what it is all about. But yes do be careful if it is not and if it is a high cost....If you are looking for a home business let me know and I can tell you about what I do...

The most common example are ads you may have seen in newspapers, magazines etc. Like this: Earn money stuffing envelopes. Send this amount of money to this address. Then they send you back the information how to place these ads in newspapers, magazines, etc. of How to earn money stuffing envelopes. These type of home businesses are out right scams.

If a company will ask you for money and does not have a real product, they are scammers. There are so many scams going after the poor and desparate who spend money for nothing. This is horrible and very wrong.

I know what you mean about having a home based business and not being taken by a scam.

There are two good companies I have found that I am an independent rep of: Enchanted Potions, www.enchantedpotions.com
Low $10 start-up, quarterly purchases of $10. EP products are hand made bath and body, lotions, perfumes, soaps and scented home products. The products are affordable and the commision is 30% on sales and your personal purchases. You recieve a free re-direct website and the use of product photos for your own website, or printed advertising. For an extra charge a one time set-up fee for your own private labeling. Private labeling is optional. You can sell online, direct sales, hostess parties, online parties, craft market basically how ever you would like to sell. There are catalogs you can order, and sell from, too.

If your interested please go to the Enchanted Potions website and find more information on becoming an Independent Representative. If you decide to join please use the referring team leader, Mindy E. She is my Team Leader. There are also opportunities to recruit reps and have your own downline and become a Team Leader and make addtional commision on your reps sales.

South Texas Naturals, which has hand made soaps and some other bath products. The new rep kits are $20, $33 or $50. This can be a one time purchase to start or you can buy additional kits if you like. The first kit you buy contains full size bars of hand made soap, catalogs, order forms and a re-direct website. Each kit has different quantities of the soap bars, catalogs and order forms. The commision is 25% for your sales and personal use.

Go to the website: www.southtexasnaturals.com to get more information and if you decide to become a rep please use my name as the referring rep: Linda H. Again only quarterly purchases are required.

Both companies offer drop-shipping of orders with no additional charges. The customer pays for shipping. No inventory, unless you want to sell products directly. Both companies offer quality products at reasonable prices. Both are real businesses owned and operated by people who want to build their business and help you have your own home based business. Simple, great products and good people, with home based companies in the US.

I am just starting a Yahoo Group to list and review compaies of hand made soaps and other hand made products in the US. Companies that offer rep or affiliate opportunities. I will be writing complete reviews of these two companies and have other similar companies. As of this date I am still working on the content and should have it posted by early next week. The Yahoo Group name is Nice Soaps. It is currently a public Group but will become private. Check it out next week for more information.

I hope this information has helped you.
