If i was to give you a shop in the middle of town, What would you use it for?
Say just a small shop, no bigger then your average town shop. What would you sell?
Best idea gets the points.

The good old fashioned hardware store, where you can pop in and get all the odd household bits and they will have them in stock. They are so hard to find in the uK

I would make it a resale shop. I would gather and fix things other people don't want and resell it at a reasonable price for people that need to discount shop. I love resale shops myself because you can sometimes find little treasures in there. Also it is a way to help recycle things so it helps our planet.

I would set up a classic "third place". The "first place" being home, the "second place" being work/school. the third place is, then, a place to hang out with friends and neighbors.

I would extablish special evening events ie. "knights at the round table" wherein younger men are joined at a table with older men to discuss set subjects or established amounts of time.

Coffee pop, snacks would all be at a nominal charge

If room allowed I would have a library where people could sit and read. I would then put discussion groups together.

Back to the old neighborhood feeling!

I live in a large village with a number of small shops. Five or six of them change hands very regularly, We have just lost a really upmarket deli/coffee shop (not enough custom I guess)(I cried!). There are a number of hair dressers that struggle on - the hardware shop is good (but expensive and most people go to B&Q) and manages to survive. Two really good butchers struggle to make a living. The cafe and bakers shops do quite well as the margin is so high - our Post Office is really popular and a real hub of the village (new asian postmasters have made it so friendly).

But, the one shop that is mobbed all week and queueing out of the door on a Saturday is the green grocer. They have made a name for themselves locally and in the wider area and if you tell someone where you live - they may not know it, but they know our Greengrocer!

Wherever possible, they use local produce from the farms around - even down to buying fruit and veg from local allotment holder's - the minimum of food miles.

They are so good that no one round here buys their fruit or veg from a supermarket. And just think of the margin - direct from the market the cost is minimal, but they sell it at competitive prices (they even have the (one or two) restaurants that we have around her buying from them).

I have lived in this village for 30 years and I have NEVER had a bad item from them.

I am so sold on this idea, I have to say that if you were to give me a shop in the middle of town it would be a green grocers.

Cheers Bigpathome

I would have a shop that sells bread rolls with all different fillings. Have a load already made up but also make them to order as customers come in and try to get local companies to phone their orders in so you can have then ready for when they call in. Also sell fresh juice drinks and all healthy products
