If you had £15000 to start a business..?
What would you do given 15000 pounds and no particular skills that could make a living

Thats exactly what I am doing!

find a niche in your home town that no-one else has done, and open a shop (I'm going for alternative [goth/emo/punk] fashion)

Keep it small to start with, small enough that you won't need staff other than yourself, £15000 will get you bucket lads of stock, and your set!

start a launderette. Seriously. After the intitial investment, all you need to do is clean up a bit now and then while others do the work AND pay you for it.

Sell Airsoft guns and equipment online. if you run an E business you can do so out of your own home with few if any overheads, ie no shop rental, staff to employ. All you are concerned with is buying stock from your whole saler and meeting demand

katehughes2706
I would start a web-based company selling sex toys and products of the like.

The guy who owns the newsagents (Booze n News - what a name!) at the top of my road drives a Lexus and a Mercedez SLK. His shop isn't particularly unique and I can't see it having cost much to start outside the initial purchase of stock.

Open a business marketed at Teens and Young Adults, with specialized, unique items for sale. Like t-shirts, accesories, DVD's, musical instruments, CD's, computer accessories, skateboarding/surfing equipment, body jewellery (perhaps even offer a QUALIFIED piercer in a back room.) Maybe a couple pool tables and an area with couches, etc. Just combine ALL the things young people like, under one roof, that way you'll have a large clientele and you'll have a one-of-a-kind shop.

Listen, it is not as easy as the previous responders make it sound. It all depends on your country, market, people... You will have to do a market research yourself and discover what the community you live in needs as services or products. Then you will have to develop a business plan that responds to the question how am I going to respond to that need. you may want to take a loan from a bank if your business plan is very convincing. sometimes taking the time to research will make the difference between success and failure.

i would work from home making food items and selling at local shops and if possible at shows , markets etc etc

Ok. forget the whole idea of a shop, you'll need at least a years rent & rates in the bank just to be on the safe side and unless its some grotty little hovel somewhere its going to eat your 15k up in no time what so ever. Add to that stock costs, shopfitting, electricity, telphone, banking /credit card costs and its quite dificult to see 15k startup money lasting you.

Retails a tricky business and all it does is eat money for the first year or so.
Why not try a web design company. You wont even need to know anything about webdesign.
Work from home, get some brochures / cards printed send em out to local companies who dont have websites, rent a webserver from hosteurope or godaddy and farm all the work out to foreign webdesigners from freelancer.com
You'll get the basic sites done for about £50 each, sell em at £100 each, charge small monthly hosting fee and go on from there. Use your initial cash for promotional work and do some reading on how to do the hosting etc. you'll pick it up in no time.
