If you had the opportunity to work for a very established Defense Contractor in maintenance for less money?
but better benefits and a retirement would you give up a position that pays more and it isn't maintenance actually not a bad job. I worked for this company 10 yrs ago and was laidoff.

You say the position has "retirement." Does that mean a pension plan or a 401(k)? If it is a true pension, which means your employer puts in the money, make sure you expect to be there long enough to get vested. Most places require you to work a certain number of years before you qualify to receive the full amount of your pension. For example, I worked at a hospital and, after 5 years, I was vested in the pension. If I had quit or gotten laid off before 5 years I wouldn't have gotten any pension benefits when I retired. If the industry is very uncertain and you could lose your job at any time then you might never reap the pension benefit. Or, if you do decide to go to work there, can you stick it out long enough to get vested? If you hate the job you might not want to stay for the full vesting period. Just a thought!

On the other hand, it is getting more and more difficult to find a company that offers a true pension. Most want you to contribute your own money and they might match it. Or only offer annuities where you pay the whole thing yourself. If this company does offer a pension - that is free money! the time to start thinking about your retirement is NOW! Who knows if Social Security will even be around or if they will keep raising the benefit age high enough so everyone is dead before you'd ever get to collect anything!

You worked for this defense contractor years ago but got laid off? If so, you need to weigh that against what you think you will get later on (benefits and retirement) if you work for them again.

If they are that established, why did you get laid off?
What will you do if you get laid off again?
Will you not lose those benefits and retirement goodies if that happens?
How long have you been at your present job, and is there a way you can have a good retirement from that without changing jobs? What are your prospects if you stay there?

Big questions....good luck. Only you know what works for you!

look at long term,if long term looks good as far as retirement, look at how long they will be in business, I am in a similiar situation, but I take less pay because I know where I am will be in buisness for the rest Of my life,a university

maybe you should look ahead not back, for if they laid you off before they may do it again if you have a good job it might be best to stay where you are.

Congrats and good luck though

Honestly it depends how old you are and I think we all know how easy it is to change a job. And if you would do so at the new job, retirement means nothing then.
It depends on you and how much more your making then you would with the new job. If your making a lot more at your current job maybe you could hold aside a savings fund which could possibly add up to your retirement but the fact it has better benifits doesnt say much,.
If this choice means alot to you you should get someone professional to help make an idea of what you would make at either job and compare or if you could do it yourself, fine.
If you have a big family though you might want to consider the job with beter benifits.
GOOG LUCK Hope you make the right choice

opinion. i would much rather make the more money now considering the fact that nobody knows when they are gonna die so why bother saving for a retirement you may never see?

Depends on how much less money? If I"m getting paid $200,000 less/yr, then no. If I'm getting $3,000-6,000 less/yr, I'd consider it, depending on just how good the benefits/retirement plan were.
