Starting a small business takes a lot of courage. But, as they say, courage does not pay the bills. To be successful – to stay in business – you need more than courage. You need a combination of hard work, skill, perseverance, and lots of luck.
Some things you need to consider:
- "Where will I get the funds while I start and build up my business?"
- "What are my abilities?"
- "Is there a market for the product or service I have chosen?"
- "How long will it take this business to reach the financial goal I have?"
Here are six basic steps to launch a new business successfully:
1. Provide a benefit.
2. Determine the fit with your market.
3. Right timing is everything
4. Be ready to support your business
5. Develop a blueprint for success
6. Market, market, market
I recommend that you read the following books:
- What No One Ever Tells You About Starting Your Own Business : Real Life Start-Up Advice from 101 Successful Entrepreneurs
- Starting From Scratch: How To Start A Business When You Don't Have Money
- If You're Clueless About Starting Your Own Business and Want to Know More
- On the Move : How to Succeed and Survive As an Entrepreneur
- How to Make 1000 Mistakes in Business and Still Succeed
I also recommend the following books on entrepreneurship geared for the young people:
- The Young Entrepreneur's Edge : Using Your Ambition, Independence, and Youth to Launch a Succesful Business (Princeton Review Series) -- by Jennifer Kushell
- The Young Entrepreneur's Guide to Starting and Running a Business : NEW: Use the Internet to jump-start your company; Find out where the money is... and ... ideas, from pet care to public relations; -- by Steve Mariotti
- Upstart Start-Ups!: How 34 Young Entrepreneurs Overcame Youth, Inexperience, and Lack of Money to Create Thriving Businesses by Ron Lieber
- Better Than a Lemonade Stand: Small Business Ideas for Kids (Kid's Books By Kids) by Daryl Bernstein
- How to be a Teenage Millionaire by T.R. Adams
- Whiz Teens In Business by Danielle Valle'E
If you need guidance in starting a business, there are several places that provides help to starting entrepreneurs. Here are places where you may be able to find a mentor:
- Government Mentoring Programs such as SBDCs, which works with community colleges and local business development councils to offer mentoring programs http://www.sba.gov/sbdc/sbdcnear.html ; or the Women's Network for Entrepreneurial Training http://www.sba.gov/womeninbusiness/wnet_roundtables.html
- Volunteer programs such as SCORE http://www.score.org which is composed of mostly retired executives and entrepreneurs
- Formal mentoring programs such as Athena Foundation http://www.athenafoundation.org/programs/globallinks.html , Helzberg Entrepreneurial Mentoring Program http://www.helzbergmentoring.org/HEMP/ , or The Aspen Institute MicroMentor Program http://www.micromentor.org
- Professional organizations such as the National Women’s Business Council http://www.nwbc.gov/Mentoring/programs.html
- Industry and trade associations
- Local business groups, such as the chamber of commerce
- Local chapters of business groups |

Hey Craig,
16 is a great age to start a business.
As you may be entering into sixth form or high school, you can study business studies AS/A2 and have the project as developing your business. There's an organisation call Young Enterprise (YE) and they allow you to set up a YE Company.
With YE Company, running your company is much simple and not as complex as real limited company on Companies House.
Find a market and suitable business idea. People from Young Enterprise UK are very helpful and they have mentors who have some business experience to help you.
Don't lose your inspiration. Read books on business and enterprise. Read series of Rich Dad Poor Dad and the new title Rich Kid Poor Kid. If you want to target local market then start reading local newspaper to find out what people are doing. Some great ideas start from watching local TV or reading newspapers where particular unfulfilled market was found.
Good luck Craig have fun with your venture. |

You need to sit down with an adult (of legal age) and talk this over. You don't mention the business but my guess is someone has already thought of it. Anyway, talk it over with your parents and proceed from there. |

Wow! Good for you! I'm not familiar with the term capital and lack knowledge in the how to start a business of my own, but a young teen here in a small town where I live has started his own little computer store. He taught himself how to build them and work with them through others he hooked up with at a young age and saved a lot of his money. He delivered news papers helped to coach kids at hocket and various other things. He figured all his little saving would add up by the time he was 16. Due to his drive he gained popularity with his dream and found people began supporting him with knowledge he lacked and his parents met him half way financially because he showed he was truly committed to his future. He has been in business for two years now and has actually fixed my computer! A little genius and very business minded. He shows his confidence, is honest, and his behavior has a professional attitude. He has moved his little shop this year on main street and is doing great! I admire his drive! He is obviously great in math, and I failed math! Still terrible at it, as I am so not good with numbers. I just threw that in...Lol! Darn it all! But anyway, I'm just hoping it helps you get a bit closer to your dream/s...don't give up! Stay focused on the goal! Best of luck to you...who knows I may end up needing your future business, that would be way cool eh? Gee's...in that sense perhaps I should reconsider changing my e-mail just to keep in touch to see how you progress towards success that would be wonderful to hear about, I'd be so happy for you, it's a nice feeling to cheer someone along and to hear they have made it! So on that note...while I'm thinking on that, here's to you! Have a great day! |
