Chalk it up to ignorance on his part. The codes arte there for a reason and if I were you I would NEVER do a job that wasn't up to code. Check with your state but I have never lived in a state that didn't demand the work being up to code. |

You should tell the customer that permits and codes are essential to insure the safety of the work done. Yes, if there is a fire or someone is injured from work you did without permits and subsequent inspections as required by the local authority then you can be sued. It might not be a could idea, consumer want to save money from the property being reassessed at a higher rate due to whatever improvements they are doing, but not at your expense. Good luck |

All you can do is make sure your own work is legal and up to code - and you should refuse to do any work that isn't or you could lose your license in addition to fines.
As for the permits, you should refuse to do the work until the customer has the permit so long as you stated that was a requirement up front.
You are responsible for your own legalities and ethics and only you will take the punishment if you get caught doing otherwise.
Remember this.. if there's an electrical fire because a customer insisted on shortcuts, its still YOUR name that will be on the lawsuit whether you told him about codes or not. |

I cannot imagine a real electrician asking this question. Code is there to prevent death and injury to you, your customer, and any future electrician.
Any customer that cheap will give you up in a heartbeat if someone is injured due to your negligent work. Be prepared to risk all your assets. |

Just tell him that if his house burns down and it was due to your work, and you didn't do it to code, you would be responsible for everyone who died.
Then look him in the eye and tell the owner that you will never put yourself in the position of killing someone and destroying their entire family and every thing he owns.
If he is willing to risk suicide, that is okay, he can find some guy who can slap something together. There are a lot of idiots who will do that. Some people only care for cheap. But most people know that cheap is rarely good.
But at least you won't be the one to go to his funeral. |

depends on where you are and your local laws, but generally you have no liability if you are not a Master or contractor. Then you could have liability if you misadvise but not if they fail to follow it. |
