That's usually how most small business owners have to start off. Unless you've got what I call a 'sugar daddy' or someone with the capital to get the biz off the ground, and keep you from starving, then you will probably want to maintain a steady job to pay those steady bills.
I used to run a small computer biz, and it did pretty decently. I had a couple of big customers with crazy networks that people had pieced together for them over the years. The problem was, I would make a bunch of cash one week, and maybe nothing for the next week or two. I found a call-center job that didn't require me to care about it when I wasn't there (or really that much while i was there). It kept rent paid while I continued doing the biz. I finally got away from it, because I took a job doing electrical design at an engineering office. Five years (and one job change) later, I am working for an architectual firm with in-house engineering.
I'm a lucky S.O.B. though.
As far as business ideas - if you can figure that one out, you could be rich. Try to look for things or services that there is a large demand for - and that there aren't already too many people supplying. Maybe look for someone willing to partner up (especially if they've got cash). Don't be afraid to fail - there is always that possibility, but you are doing it the smart way by keeping yourself a safe steady job while attempting a start up.
Good Luck!! |

I did this and my employer never knew until the day I thought it was time to go fully on my own. |

My husband and I have an online/offline retail franchise that might work for you. I can't give you details here since it's against the rules of this site but send me an email or check out my profile if you'd like more information. |

Go to ebay and read through all the inspirational stories about people with personal ebay stores.
If you can stand it, buying into one of the network marketing schemes can make you some dough, but you have to be willing to really work it hard in order to get on top of your 'downlines'.
Think about your hobbies and interests and what kind of side work is compatible with your personality. If it's not fun, you won't be committed.
I have a friend that liked to make her own candles. She opened a very successful candle shop, but after 5 years or so, she got burnt out (ha ha ha). I joke, but the story is true.
I have another friend that took seminars and then, her and her husband started buying apartments with no money down. Now they have 30 units w/ a net positive income of around 4k per month. This one requires alot of work up front, by the way.
You can learn to do taxes and become a licensed tax preparer on the side.
You can take a certification at a local vocational college and:
1. Do home assessments for people.
2. Do home inspections.
You could get your license in massage therapy. It's alot of effort but relaxing work and the pay is decent when you are working.
Good luck

go on google and type in avon.
when on the website theres a section for jobs as an avon rep.
you get to choose your own hours, work by your own speed, meet new people and its like your own business. you obviously work on commission, but it aint that bad for orders around the summer and winter.
they have great offers, theres no charge fee and you can get started asap. you can also make cash yourself on it and you get your own catalogue for discounted products.
give it a go and if it aint for you then you can quit it whenever you like.
i have to warn you though that you need to take atleat £74 worth of orders or you dont get comission, but in the summer- it seems very small and will reach more than that target.
its ok if its only to earn extra cash and its more achievable if you get your friends and family buying from you. |

Contact the small business section of your local Chamber of Trade - they should give plenty of advice |

Yes, set up as a sole trader. You do not need to do anything, you just need to fill out a tax return for the year 07/08 (which means you send it off in Jan 09). Make sure you set up after 6/4/07 as that is the start of the new tax year. The benfits of this are you can claim tax relief, i.e. reduce the amount of tax you pay, and anything you have bought in the past 7 years in preparing to run your business can be deducted from your tax bill, so if you are a higher rate payer (over 40k), you would be paying £400 for a £1000 pc for e.g. Talk to an accountant who can sort this out for you, its not difficult, and will cost about £700, but will save you around £3000 in tax!!! or you can ask me! Make sure you go through a chartered accountant in a proper firm, not a high street one. It will take a 30min chat with you, to find out the nitty gritty details, but it has huge potential. Oh and I forgot to mention, you can run your business this way while working. |

I started a home business that I thought was just going to help me for tax purposes, not something I really wanted to pursue, just extra spending money. When I saw the potential and started to build it, I found no shortage of customers and will never go back to a regular job again. |
