I have been working as a government employee for the last 25 years. But I have not earned anything yet. Whatever earned is consumed. In other words - hand to mouth. I too have a dream - a dream of having a house of my own, having a dream car, educating my children in good school and college and above keeping my wife happy with sound sourcing of finance - a modest living. My problem is I don't find any way out to earn more. |

Unfortunately you've invested quite a few years of your life into this career. Because of your age and I am assuming that you are over the age of fifty it's pretty difficult to make a career change at this point in time of your life. Check to see if there are any moves you can make from within your present place of employment that you can test for and are qualified to do before thinking about leaving. It may be difficult but not impossible. Perhaps taking a second job as a part-time worker would work. No, you are not a fool. Job security with benefits means a lot, especially with family and all of the responsibilities that come with it. Good Luck. |

Obviously you don't have a modest living if you are only living "hand to mouth". Either you are clearly being underpaid for your services (and if you're a government employee, I doubt that), or you spend more than what you make to keep up the lifestyle you wish to live.

This is a fact of reality. I have a friend who just retired from the Veterans Hospital. He was a psych nurse. I am amazed to see that he ,upon retirement fom working for our government does not even make enough to live on upon retirement. He has to save anything extra in money after paying bills so he will have enough to make it to next months retirement pay. This is a reality of life. I really want to blame someone for this. If anyone it would be our leaders in government. I don't know how many times I hear of a Senator or whatever giving themselves a payraise. Until the government steps up and takes charge of wages raising along with prices , we are not going to be able to live the American dream.

It will all come down to how you manage your money. Every now and then you hear about a school teacher who was able to retire rich because she lived below her means and carefully invested her savings. Many people can become rich without making more money. In fact, making more money often leads to people getting more poor. How? They get a bigger paycheck so they decide to spend more money. The get bigger loans. They end up with more stuff but less money. Pretty soon they are desperate for another raise.
You should have access to a 403b at work. I would start putting money into it. You are probably getting close to retirement since you have been working for 25 years but starting late is better than never starting. I take all of my raises and put them straight into my 403b. My takehome pay has actually gone down over the past couple of years. However, I am building up a nice retirement account. It does not happen overnight. Little increments make a big difference over time. |

I don't know if this is much help, but if you can save even 40.00 dollars a week, you could save $2080.00 a year. In a couple of years, you could have a down payment on a house. |

You need to create a budget that includes before ANYTHING is spent, savings. Don't focus on earning more, focus on spending less. If you have no savings after 25 years, yes, you are foolish when it comes to understanding money. Plan on your children working to save for college, or applying for loans. You are in no position to put your children through college. |

I don't know what your problems are or what your facing that is causing your earnings to be consumed.
You might have to learn to spend less and that way you can at least save some of your income.

Depending on the job you had you can take your skills into private industry and make great money.
If you have accumulated the knowledge of how the government operates in your field you should try to market yourself to businesses as a consultant that can help work the ins and outs of government processes. |

There is a simple solution. You need to earn more but you need the security of your current job to pay the bills. The answer is to start a home business. It's something you can build on the side, while continuing to work at your job until your business income meets, then surpasses your current income. When you're working a couple of hours per day towards a bright future, you'd be surprised at how quickly you grow your business.
I have several people in my group who have done just that and never looked back! It's all in how big your dream is. |
