$2700 is about right if you are going with ecommerce, setting up ecommerce sometime can be very complicated.
$700 for hosting is way too much. You can get great hosting at about $7/month and most of them provides Ecommerce's program, all you need is modify it . |

Some designers can charge more because they have a reputation or they're simply better or more talented.
You really need to look at their portfolio to make a decision as to whether it's worth it. |

depends how much work youre having him do. if its a huge complex site with flash animations and stuff then that price is reasonable. if its just one page with a picture on it then no. |

Some people will charge that much when the person needing the website doesn't know they can get it for less. The best way to find out is call around for quotes and find the best price. Most web designers and hosting sites will do it for cheap. |

That sounds reasonable...it all depends on how complex and sophisticated it is.
You could spend millions on a web site, or you could spend hundreds. There is no single answer. |

It depends how much money that website will generate for you. If it will be $10,000 or above, don't think it is worth it? If you think the website won't generate enough to cover your cost, then forget it. |

I know someone who could do it cheaper... |

I think the $2,700 for "Creative" is a bit steep, unless he is doing something so unique and spectacular to your website which others can't do for anything less, which would really surprise me (that others couldn't do the same for less).
If it were me, I would definetely shop around before committing to anything - Good Luck! |

Sounds alike a lot of monies - depends on how much and what he is creating - I would get additional quotes before I agree to this person price!@ |

no, that is about right, especially since you are adding ecommerce and hosting. Those people who told you it would be less have never done the work!
I charge minimum $50 per page - ususally $270 for the index page and an additional $100 per page if anything like asp, cgi, password protect, etc. (Such as a shopping cart) If I have to do any "creative", such as design, logos, artwork or have to write the content for the client, that adds $35 per hour on top of the site. Java or active X is an additional $100 plus $35/ hour. If they request exclusive script or anything that requires customization on the server, also $35 per hour. Hosting is $19,95 for basic hosting per month and $35 per hour for updates.
So, sounds to me like the deal you are getting is right on. For that price, make sure you are getting free tech support and maintenance included and rights to the custom artwork he is doing for you. That way, if you end up using someone else later down the road, you have the rights to your logo and art. |

Sounds like the going rate. Now all you have to do is promote it, so people know your site exists. |

If your site is not e-commerce and in need of a shopping cart, absolutely yes it is too much.
You can pay about $15 a month with Yahoo, who has hundreds of templates for you to choose from.
If you are willing to use a simple Microsoft program FRONT PAGE, you can go to www.BoxedArt.com and pay $50 for any kind of website you could imagine, from simple to sophisticated. |

Wow are you going to able to afford that?
No,you can probably get a good webbie for about 100-500? or less :) |

That depends on the website.
If it's site made for a business, then it can get expensive.
But, if it's just a personal site for you, heck...I'd skip all that and make one for yourself at a free website. http://www.freewebs.com
The best thing I can suggest, if you are getting this created for a business, is to go to google.com and research the usual going rate. |

Yeah, for 7 pages that is kind of high. For a good custom design, 3 looks to choose from and the ability to combine those different looks for something unique - $1500 would be a good start point.
I got a few sites designed and the base price for a site was $550 for a template site and $1350 for a custom site. The time frame was about 2 weeks on the build. |
