Is Ebay dying a slow death?
Has anyone noticed that sellers are not selling as much on Ebay and buyers are shopping elsewhere?
Any Ebay sellers or buyers have any input?

I'm not sure if eBay has become any less popular recently, but just in the past year and a half of selling, I've seen items sell for less now than they used to.

Because of the drop in the value of the dollar, compared to Euros, American buyers can't really compete with overseas buyers, and many sellers only ship to the US and Canada. This cuts out a significant portion of the money that might be available for bidding.

Also, I've always noticed a slowdown in the middle of December until some time after the New Year. A lot of people seem to get their Christmas presents on eBay when they can still be assured of receiving the item before Christmas. Prices usually rise around November/early December and then drop off.

There are alot of alternate places where buyers (and sellers) can go now, as well. Amazon offers third parties the opportunity to sell new/used items directly through Amazon, and when Amazon is out of a product itself, then buyers can purchase their items from these third parties, and still feel as if they are purchasing through Amazon.

Half.com (owned by eBay) is also a great site to find discounted items that, at one time, may have ended up as auctions on eBay. Plus eBay Stores allows sellers to sell items directly to buyers without an auction format -- it's a set price purchase.

All of these, as well as many other factors, I'm sure, contribute to swings in eBay's popularity. eBay is a great resource for hard-to-find anything, and I doubt it would completely die, but there are other competitors (some owned by eBay themselves) that provide shopping resources that are just as worthwhile as eBay.

I think the fees that eBay charges sellers has forced them to mark up prices to the point that they cannot compete with other sites that sell the same product.

There aren't so many bargains there - you can find better deals using google quite often. Also some people have had problems with fraud and bootleg goods sold as genuine.

I still use it from time to time - but I'm usually very careful.

Yes Ebay has become too strict with their rules and their rules change by the minute. If you list your item your auction may be pulled for the wording in the listing or if the item you are selling is a name brand item they may pull your auction as well... Ebay is just too strict if you ask me

New sellers are selling on ebay every day. More competition coming in. Also other auction websites are popping up. Ebay is following the flow of the rest of the economy. Buyers are buying less or are being careful about their purchases.

There was a huge news story about how Craigs list is taking a lot of business away from Ebay. It's free. Not a lot of people know about Craigs list and they don't like that you have to actually meet with the person to exchange hands. Also, paypal, which is the prefered payment on there really takes away a lot of profit.

i have noticed this too, but i don't think that eBay is going to die any time soon. this is probably due to the increase of web sites similar to eBay. eBay is going to have more buyers eventually which means that eBay is going to have more sellers.

i think so. its become really unpopular in my circle of friends over the past two years for some odd reason. they say the people kinda trick you and dont send you stuff for like a year.

Yes.

I don't know what you are basing your opinion on, but it is certainly not based here in reality. Ebay is monstrous, and is not anywhere near slowing down, nor dying.
I shop on Ebay all the time, and I love it!

Steph
yeah i've noticed but i don't like Ebay i think it's stupid

As both an e bay buyer and seller, for the past 14 yrs, And seller for 4 yrs, I have seen far too many negative changes for sellers. Buyers taking advantage of sellers and ebay's next to impossible rules and high fees. It used to be "Buyer Beware" now it is "Seller Beware". Sellers can't even leave - feedback for unscrupulous buyers! It's really sickening!
