Hi, Chelsea. I'm a MK consultant too and I know all to well how you are feeling. Be there. I know you are overwhelmed right now and that's to be expected for those just coming aboard. However, take in a deep breath and exhale. It's going to be alright. Stay connected with fellow MK consultants and we'll help educate you how to succeed. Also, the other MK consultants on here offered great advice too.

My director always sends out a welcome packet to all new consultants in our unit and with it is info on inventory. Inventory is a PERSONAL choice. Whether you start out with an arm load or a trunk load, it's your decision on how you want to run your business. The directors only want to inform you the options of having an arm load versus a trunk load and how it will affect your business. Which ever the case may be for you, you are the boss of your business and you decide how to run it.

If all you want to do is start out (let's say) with $600. Great! If you ony want to start out with $200. Great! Just remember, it takes the initial $200 to start getting your 50% discount.

Just demo out of your starter kit. Have people get together and have them try it. It will sell itself. They either like it or they don't.

Be sure to be open with your director about what YOU want. Remember, you may hear in training classes the pro's of having inventory, but don't let that sway you. Their just trying to educate.

Use your MK to help pay bills around your house. Mary Kay Ash taught the 60/40 split. 60% of what you sell goes to fill the orders that people made and the 40% to pay a bill, stock your inventory shelf, any Section 2 orders, Career Conference, Seminar, etc.

You've already received the starter kit, give it a chance and always stay in contact with your director and the person you signed withn for vital information on how to make your MK business a success. I personally teach my consultants how to hold a class by going with them or them with me. I teach them how to recruit and I share cd's that I have bought from MK so they also will grow. I'm there for my consultants and support them so they don't beat their head against the walls. If you'll do exactly what has been proven to work, it will work for you. I'm a witness to that (because I tried to reinvent the wheel and it didn't work).

You will go far in Mary Kay if you believe in yourself. You CAN do it!

Hi,
I've sold both Mary Kay and Avon and I no longer do either.
I understand what you are saying with the Mary Kay inventory thing- however, you do not have to have the inventory and do NOT let anyone pressure you into going into debt to get inventory!!!!!!! You can show customers the look book and pass it out and pass out samples etc and take orders. You can hold classes with just the starter kit and the samples until you start making a lot of money, or forever if you choose.
One thing I like about Mary Kay is that although their books cost more than Avon's you only have to get new ones 4 times a year, with Avon they have a new book every two weeks- I just couldn't keep up with that.
My biggest problem with Avon is that you don't always get 50% commission and I found it very difficult to sell enough in two weeks to be able to get my 50%- with Mary Kay you ALWAYS get 50%.
I quit selling Mary Kay because I tired of it and I hated making phone calls and meeting new people at the stores.
I quit selling Avon because my customers would order products and Avon would sell out of them. If I already took their money I would have to refund it so I had to hold the money for up to two weeks to see if the product would come or not.
My mom ordered some boots from me and I ordered them and the company ran out and told me to reorder the following campaign, I did and they were still out, this went on for about 6 months before I finally called the company and told them I no longer wanted to be associated with them.
You could always do both.... its only $10 to sign up for Avon..... but if I were you I would stick with the Mary Kay- because you've already paid for the starter kit.
I would NOT order inventory or anything else!!! You can get free business cards from various websites- just do stuff as cheap as you can until you start making money.
I agree that it is easier to sell what people have in front of them, but taking orders from the book and samples is what you would be doing with Avon and chances are that you would not be getting 50% commission.

Hi
I started my MK business 6 months ago. I've taken Christmas and New Years and Tax Season off but just started back this month. I did buy the inventory, but that's not totally necessary, just easier and faster delivery to the customer. Why don't you just take it slow and build your client base up over the next few months? Then if you have extra cash use it to build up inventory? Did you try the products in the Start-up kit? Give them a try and then if you like them start telling people about it and what you like about the product. Best of luck!!

Do not feel pressured. I would be happy to help you Yes you are going to feel very overwhelmed the first 2 weeks even feel like quiting but it does getting better and become fun again it is very overwhelming I tell all my new consultant you might want to blow up your start kit and even hate me but it will pass just pass yourself. Break it down what is you MK goal? You director should be helping you with this and not making you feel overwhelmed be honest with her about how you feel sometimes they just don't realize how you are feeling because they are trying to inform you. You mentioned so many feelings and I can tell you I know how you feel I have been there I had a 2 year old and worked a full time job when I started. How many hours do you want to work how much do you want to make or are you doing this for girlfriend time and fun????
With the answers to those question I can better help you. I can tel you from my personal experience it is a great company and I love it very much it have been building my business for about 4 years now and it can fit any life you just need to work with someone that can show you how to make it fit into your life. I held my appointments in my home while the baby napped so i never need a baby sitter other times I did play dates with other moms so again no sitter needed you do what is best for you.

My advice would be to show the products you received in the kit and buy samples. You can purchase most everything in a sample form. Good luck!

I was just drug to a Mary Kay party this week. The woman did not have inventory on hand and no one expected her to. She had a small display of items and talked about products in the catalog, took the orders, checks and said she would get the items ordered.

I was not with Mary Kay but another business similar and was pressured to buy inventory. Several years later and out of the business and I STILL have inventory.

ALSO - before you decide to do both Avon and Mark Kay - you need to read your Policies and Procedures. Many companies do NOT allow you to do both at the same time.
~good luck- BUT also remember it's YOUR business... don't let anyone pressure you into something that does not feel right. And if you got in under pressure, I would get out.

It it definitely easy to get in debt with Mary Kay. With Avon, the products are easy to sell because they are so cheap...but I've found you don't make a lot of money for having others sell. I like Arbonne. They have superior products and no inventory required. Product ships directly from the company to the customer.

The Avon Lady
Ok you have joined Mary Kay and they ALWAYS push stocking up on inventory. They say you don't need to but constantly harass you to stock up. DON'T do it... No matter what they say. You may want to try staying with it since you already joined but if it gets to be too much then do what is best for you.

I sell Avon and think its a far better way to go. Nobody ever tells you to stock up on products. There is no inventory or minimum orders required. You can work your business in the way it works best for you. I find selling Avon fun. Your commission % is based on sales after the first 4 campaigns though as shown.

For your first campaign you will earn 50% commission when you place your order online. For your Second, Third, and Fourth campaigns, you will earn 50% commission provided your orders are greater than $50, and you place your orders online. After your first four campaigns, the commission structure is as follows:
Order Size Earnings
$1550 or more 50%
$900 - $1549 45%
$425 - $899 40%
$285 - $424 35%
$145 - $284 30%
$25 - $144 20%
$00 - $24 0%
Licensed products are earned at 20% commission.

I always tell people that join, the only thing you need to sell Avon is the brochures. The more you buy the less they cost.

You can find more info and FAQ's about Avon on my profile. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you might have.

The problem with Mary Kay and Avon is how do you get customers? Are you going to sell to your friends and family? Are you going to advertise? It is too hard to obtain and better yet, retain customers. Take a look at this program, there are some low up front start up fees, but they are well worth it. You are able to answer infomercial calls right from your home from people who want to buy your (our) products. The concept is genius. They have a make-up line as well as a variety of other products:
