My partner is thinking about going self-employed. Good or bad idea??? He has NVQ 3 + qualification, with 7 years experiance.

He is a site joiner/ex kitchen fitter ect, Basicly he can do just about everything. |

Is it a good idea - difficult to say.
it depends on many factors not lease:
1) is he a self starter
2) is the idea sound - a stable or growing market
3) how will he cope with ambiguity - i.e. some weeks loads of work (too much) other where there is none
4) is he detail focused? can/ will he do his own accounts etc..
5) is he good at talking to people, can he build the business
6) can you both survive with an income that changes and is unpredictable - few make much money for the first 6 months
Talk to business link (http://www.businesslink.gov.uk/) about local training courses for self employed.
Do a swot and PESTLE analysis on both your partner and the 'market' he expects to work in.
Have a look at the results and make an informed decision based upon facts.
Do not expect work to flood in - marketing is key - and must be sustained...
For some self employment is the best thing... for others it does not work out...

there are good and bad points of going self-employed, my brother-in-law is a self-employed builder, and he is struggling, he is having to pay staff from his credit cards because he isnt being paid for jobs when he should be, he hasnt had a weekend off in 3 months, its pretty tough going.
on the flip side, my father-in-law is self-employed but contracted to dolphin bathroom fitting, so he doesnt have too much difficulty always having work, and he gets most weekends off to, but he still has to pay for materials etc etc and any staff he needs, he has to pay out of his pocket. it can be rewarding, a friend of mine is a black-taxi driver, again self-employed and he just has to work 4 days a week and has every weekend free should he want it........it just depends what your partner wants to do with his 7yrs experience in?? |

I have been self-employed for 20 years, it has its high's and low's.
Specialise in something, I now lecture all over the country on food safety and have worked with all the major supermarkets at one time or another.
Go for it.

Problem is, I can no longer work for anyone else ever again!
I have a small retail shop. I'm living my dream.
However, if you start a business, do not count on making money for years. For 5 years I did not take a pay. You need family & friends behind you to support you for quite a while.
I have never worked so hard, for so little & loved it so much.

it all depends on what kind of business you are starting up. personally i think its a great idea. my sister has her own company where pregnant women go for scans. is a rare thing in scotland. she told me it is hard work but she is starting to really make the cash now. |

That is a difficult question.
It depends what you are going self employed at.
You must look into how much money to start up is needed.
What clientele you can find regularly
If you can obtain the products if you are selling easily
It can work if you have a professional attitude and don't under price or overprice.
If you quote a price at the beginning and it is too low it is difficult to go up on price.
If you quote too much you can come down
Investigate things about the field you intend to go into.
Get ideas. Keep books on everything. Filing systems of bills and other stuff.
Find a good accountant. |
