Brian P | Is it bad to send a fax to advertise my junk hauling company? |

Most people get annoyed by unsolicited faxes and generally just toss them.
Most real estate offices have a receptionist to handle incoming traffic. My recommendation would be to walk into that office with some brochures and strike up a conversation with the receptionist. If you go in the AM, bring some donuts with you. Be sure to be able to focus on three main points why they should use your business - for example:
1) Easy way for home owners to clear out clutter to show home
2) Available on short notice (or however long) to meet the needs of agent and homeowner
3) Competitive pricing
The receptionist may just take your brochures and thank you for stopping by, but at least you got face-to-face. However, with the right conversation, you may get the receptionist to direct you to the agent(s) or manager that can really spread your information. Follow up every meeting with a receptionist by sending a personal thank you card and throw in a Starbucks card worth $10. If you get any business because of the receptionist, be sure to send her/him something more. These are the front line people who determine who gets by the front lines. You want them on your good side.
Perhaps you might also want to offer some sort of partnering agreement where you take 10% off (or some % or even a flat fee) for any hauling done for a homeowner who has listed their home with the agent. This gives the agent another selling tool to get listings and also makes the agent more willing to refer you. |

I don't believe it is a good idea. The fax machine isn't for advertising, it is for information related to the work the company does. Put your information into envelopes and use the snail mail. I bet you get more responses that way. |

Do you like spam in your email? Do you like stupid mailings in your mail box? Yes, it's a mistake. My fax machine at my office gets "brochures" and ads all the time....it's a waste of paper and toner/ink. |

It is still spam.... |

It's more business savvy to go to the office and ask the person at the front desk if you could leave a few fliers advertising your hauling business.
It's annoying to get unsolicited faxes. We just throw them away, plus it burns up a ton of toner.
PS Good idea to advertise hauling @ real estate offices! |

yes, its annoying because sometimes we are waiting for certain faxes. So please call and ask if it is okay. Call and see if we are interested first. Thanks, |

There ought to be a law to stop you from wasting other peoples resources for your material gain. |

do you like to be bothered? |

Actually, it is a very bad idea!! Some states (Colorado) have started class action lawsuits against companies that fax out advertisements. The people recieving these are basically suing for paper, ink and time lost when their fax machine and phone lines weren't available for their own actual business. |

I'd avoid fax. Sure it doesn't "bother" them, but bothering them is what you want to do, just in a good way. If I get 10 spammed faxes a day, and yours is in there, I'm just going to throw it away. But if you came to my office, and just politely introduced yourself to my secretary or to me, offered your services, and just were really nice and stated your case succinctly, that's the brochure I'd hold onto.
Your type of work is based on word-of-mouth too. Ask for testimonials from your customers; get a website and post them (with the customer's permission, of course!). Get yourself listed on Angie's List too (www.angieslist.com).
With these real-estate agents, the more they can learn about you the easy way (using a computer/Blackberry), the more likely they'll contact you. |

I think thats considered spam. You might even irratate potential customers by doing this, you waste THIER printer's ink doing this. I would find another way to advertise. |

I believe that it is illegal. You cannot fax advertising to a number you do not do business with. You had better look up the law, or ask your lawyer, before you get slammed with a fine that you deserve.
And btw, if I depended on my fax machine as much as real estate agents do, I would never do business with spamming scum like you. |

I would fax them, then a few days later go there and give them a brochure. Selling is about getting in peoples faces and minds and letting them know you are serious and professional. |
