From what I've read, it is always legal for a company to place surveillance, either with or without the knowledge of employees, in all states in the U.S. The only exception to this (and I'm not sure what case set the precedent) is that an employer is not allowed to install surveillance in restrooms or changing areas. |

Yes, as long as they're not installed in the bathrooms. It's their property, their business...they have a right to know what's going on. |

Who cares if it's legal -- people do precisely what they want.
And if you are trying to trap someone, they might just toss the tape in the trash if your laws require that the employee be informed.
So, really, what it comes down to in this evolution of the Big Brother society is: DO YOU want to be THAT kind of freak who is so afraid of everything that you need to watch everyone? As if you have the time to review it all. Can't you trust your instinct to hire and keep people you feel "right" about, or are you one of those bosses that underpays its employees and then gets upset when they retaliate, which is the normal thing to do.
If you are the employee, and you are acting properly, then you have nothing to worry about. If you are not, check the laws in your area -- the fact that you are being recorded without consent might be all you need to dismiss a case.
When did we reach this point that we even NEEDED to be babysat in our adulthood? It's tragic... |

The answer is probably yes. While there are strict laws against audio recording, there are few law against video recording. |

Call the non-emergency number for your police or sheriff's department and ask, or call a lawyer if you know one as a friend (so it won't cost you!). Each state will likely have quite different laws about this.
Oh - and call from home or some place other than from work! Big brother could be listening as well as watching. |
