Yes. You can only call yourself a Charity if you get charity status and a charity number. To do that, you have to demonstrate that it is for a charity able cause.
Diverting money from a charity for your own gain, or falsely claiming you are a charity is fraud.
HOWEVER, lots of charities have high personal expenses and often can draw large salaries. Some charities can give as little as 20p in the pound to actual good causes and the rest is swallowed up by 'admin'. |

I don't know about legality but here in New Zealand a guy decided to walk the length of the country raising money for himself - his goal was to raise 1 million dollars, and he did it with sass and personality - he just approached people and asked for one dollar - no more, and was kind of cheeky about it - he used the media a lot, and was interviewed by radio and newspapers and TV everywhere he went - I think he had a blog, too. Nobody worried about it because he was so much fun, and he became a real personality. But I agree with the poster who said it is begging. |

To be a charity, your organisation must have aims - or charitable purposes - that are exclusively charitable. For example, it may aim to advance education or religion, relieve financial hardship or benefit the wider community.
In addition to their charitable purposes, charities also have to pass a test to demonstrate that they operate for public benefit.

so basically the answer is no, you wouldn't be able to start a personal charity for your own gain!! |

In the UK you would need it to be approved by the charities commission. You would not get approval. I suspect other countries have similar controls. |

V funny. The main requirement for a charity is that it should show 'public benefit', ie have fairly wide remit to benefit a large section of the population. This is why some private schools are reviewing their policies to open their sports facilties, etc to the public, or else they may find themselves losing their charitable status. |

It wouldn't be a charity it would be begging if you want money then get a job if you have a job think of ways you can cut back & save a little money. It may take awhile to save the money but it would be worth it in the long run cause you wouldn't be getting a hand out |
