How much should I charge to drive 12 miles, take 2 dogs for an hours walk, then drive 12 miles back - once a day, 5 days a week......in the North East of England....

Is my idea for clothing unethical?
I live in the UK. I would like to produce clothing for myself, by employing about twenty kids from the local village to produce them. They would work for ten hours a day and I'd pay them perhaps 20p an hour. Is this ethical?
I assume of course that when people purchase clothes from Primark etc. the makers of the garments are all adults, paid a fair wage?

YOUR HIGHNESS:

Are you saying you would pay these children 20p (like .33 cents) an hour?

It is too much to pay each child that much money. Or, are you saying you will pay the group of children cumulatively 20p an hour. 20p an hour for the lot would be equivalent to what the big name clothes manufacturers pay their forced labor Asian children. Ethics has nothing to do with business, and visa versa!!!!

Super Amanda
Ok so your sarcasm is funny but of course it's not ok to exploit people and you should avoid all the Primark, H&M made in sweatshop stuff. How? Buy vintage clothing and look for guild and union labels. Ebay is the best place to go. But don't defiantly open your own sweatshop mate!

I stopped buying all clothing that is not made in the US or Western Europe about three years ago. I know there are sweatshops here but at least it's in my own back yard where I can stop it if it happens. Chine, Korea, INDIA? Crikey! Forget it. no way. I don't want to "go to hell" for buying clothing that people have suffered to make.

Musty
do it ur way! many kids are homeless and need money

ZBDblues
I do get your point, and it's easy for us to view this as unethical, but if you've travelled you can see the bigger picture. It's really a reflection of the stae of the world today.

The Tenth Duke of Chalfont
See, this is why I don't shop in bargain basement clothing outlets and thus have a conscience clear enough to permit me to do other miscreant deeds.

As for paying children, I'd say pay them 25p an hour and then you may find a better uptake.

And you intend to find 20 kids in the UK prepared to accept 20p an hour. Best of British, you'll need it. Most kids are on a fortune in pocket money

It's a shame so many people have missed your point, because it's really a very good comparison (unless, of course, I'm the one whose misunderstood it) - it happens here and it's unethical, illegal. It happens somewhere else and we buy the clothes.

Besides, you couldn't find 20 kids here who would work for £2.

Unethical possibly, illegal definitely!

What part of the question do you think is unethical? I don't see any problems so far, I trust you deduct the cost of heating and lighting from their, if I may say so, generous salaries? Keep up the good work Beauville, my Uncle Jasper just may have an overseas contract for you when he sees your competitive rates, supplying sweatshop kids in Calcutta with basic raiment's.

Oops, I did it again...........

*sigh* I get your point... I really hate to think that some of my pretty clothes were made by innocent children... it's just wrong. =| Tbh when I think about it, it seems too cruel to be ture and I can't actually believe it....it's crazy really.

I'm not playing anymore. This question is a waste of my time.
