L80_80 | Is my idea "stupid"? |
I have a small business idea....can you please offer advise and tell me if it seems silly or farfetched?
I have a really great day job, however, I recently thought about a small business I could start. I make homemade fudge - which is very expensive, scarce in my area, (ontario), and keeps in the freezer pretty much forever. It is also very tricky to make properly (no marshmallows, just old fashioned boiled sugar & cream). Based on this, I felt I could sell my fudge, especially close to Christmas.
In order to get started, I thought Church Bazaars, craft sales & farmers markets were good bets, but - all the farmer's markets are closed for the season, and the Bazaars seem to be booked up....
My next idea was an old-fashioned roadside stand on a country road well traveled in my area on a Saturday and Sunday.....my family thinks this is really lame and is akin to begging on a street corner.....what do you think? Would I look silly at a roadside stand selling fudge in November?? (No snow, by the way...still good weather...)
Please your thoughts! Feeling pretty discouraged right now. Additional Details Just as an add on: I have checked all the "government regulations". Laws governing farmers markets, bake sales, farms, bazaars etc. are different from commercial food. This is why you can still hold a back sale at a primary school without a commercial food license, and without ingredients list...this is the umbrella I would be operating under. |

First I congratulate you for the positive outlook you seem to have in most things apparently. It is really excellent you don't let any barriers come between you and what you believe to be right. Believe it or not I know of a family (close by) that has done same thing in the past, but this person has been really persistent and gone on doing what NEEDS TO BE DONE.
By the time I was getting to your fourth paragraph, seeing that all avenues were closed, I was about to "compute my brain" to get any other idea for your expedited entrepeneurship, but gladly see you already had developed one of your own!
While definetely not advicing to do this alone or by yourself_it is never safe to be alone near any road_I do suggest you have the members of your family who will not try discouraging you on these workdays of yours. Unfortunately well intended family members can hurt our intiatives and instead of helping physically or emotionally, they produce the wrong results in us.
Take with you the ones which do realize this is serious business for you and have laid out what part of the business they will be dealing with.
Also don't forget to get some form of advertising, even if it's a few nicely made signs to be placed from at least two different directions in the road. WORD OF MOUTH also helps. Whether this stand becomes permanent or not, don't forget to go back to add the first two venues you came up with once the season permits it. |

it's not stupid, but keep in mind there are a lot of gov't restrictions when it comes to selling food products. You'll definitely some sort of license and when it comes to selling food you'll need "nutritional info" , ingrediants, etc listed on the package. The last thing you want to do is sell a piece of fudge that used something like peanuts or even peanut oil to someone that is highly allergic to them. Can you say Major Lawsuit? :-)
seriously, before you start dealing with selling food, I would suggest you contact your local gov't office and find out the regulations. |

First of all, I'm pretty sure you need a license to sell. Second, try it out as part time, don't quit your day job until you start making real money. |

I think it's a lovely idea! And why not try it out?
You could make up a little catalogue to give to friends and family--the types, sizes of packages and the cost. Ask them if they would take orders for you. Your roadside stand is great--if you get some publicity for it! Try your local newspaper--maybe they'd like to run a story on a home-business like this. It's not begging--it's SELLING! :D
If you sell your fudge commerically, you may want to look into the regulations in your county for producing food for sale to the public--whether or not you will need a vendor's license (almost certainly) and/or a public health inspection (maybe--depends on the type and quantity of food sold.) Just give them a call and ask for the regulations.
You may also want to consider a little "pushcart" type of thing--where you could go from place to place with your product. Make sure that when you sell, you give out a little card or note with your product that lists all the ingredients, the way to store it, the length of time it will keep in the freezer and your PHONE NUMBER! so you can be called again if they want more.
Try asking your local health food or natural foods store if they would be interested in carrying your fudge. Or you may even want to check out the turnpike in your state--in Ohio, there are year-round farmer's markets at some of the Toll Plazas and they all feature homemade food and gifts!
Make sure you're charging enough to cover all this "overhead"-- including transportation. And good luck!
PS: Bazaars start booking vendors 6 months ahead of time. If you go to any, ask for their schedule and next year you can make it! |

"Stupid" is a term I'd never say about a business proposal; "Risky" might qualify here, however. I'd advise that you do it, but in small batches and only what you can reasonably expect to sell in a weekend. Price and portion sizes will both be critical--don't price it far above cost in the beginning and offer it in different sizes, with quantity discounts (maybe 5% discount for a 2 kg order-?). I don't know much about fudge, but if you can insert something with every sale about your shipping policies or a website, I'd suggest that so that you can sell from your home in your spare time to build up the business while keeping your f/t job until the fudge pays the bills. |

I think you should go for it! Make sure to have some free samples. Maybe even do something small on the computer like a pamphlet you could have copied to hand out. You might even be able to get your fudge into a store in your town. You never know until you ask! Good Luck! |

Canuck Fudge, you could sell at mom&pop stores or antique store or indoor markets! Check legal liability laws or seek the advice somebody already doing it! |

In USA, you have to make any food in a commercial kitchen, they are very fussy about this. But assuming you can borrow one or rent some of downtime (like at night when they are closed)...
Bazaars - find someone with a similar product (like cookies) and see if they will show/sell your product as well for a piece of the profits. You save because you dont have to rent or staff a booth. Also, try some local stores that might be interested in same deal. Make sure you understand your costs, and that you can sell at wholesale prices and make a profit. You can also do a deal with a local shcool or non-profit for fund raising, even get them to take orders FIRST. Maybe try the gift shop at the hospital, some well-located gas stations. Offer small pieces individually wrapped to an upscale hotel or big pieces for their gift shop (or both). See if some local businesses want to give it away to their clients or employees as christmas gifts.
I do NOT like the roadside idea. |
