Mike | Is my "business" legal and/or ethical? Do I "rip people off"? |
I decided to start a "business" reselling auto parts. I'm very knowledgeable about auto parts (BMW mostly), and often able to buy them on craigslist, ebay, or internet forum for far less than they are worth. When I do this, I am often dishonest with the person selling these parts and tell them that theirs parts are worth less than they actually are. I then resell these parts on either the same sources or locally for profit. Typically, I can make 300-400 dollars on each transaction. When selling these parts, I misrepresent them as my personal parts (because I cannot resell parts on many car forums without being a sponsor). I obviously always deliver the goods I sell in a timely manner, I never took money and didn't deliver goods. Although you can say I "rip people off" buy buying cheap and selling high, is that not the case with most resellers? None has any obligations to sell to me or buy from, I simply buy for as cheap as I can and sell as high as I can. Isn't that what everyone doe Additional Details I appreciate all the responses, most of them were very helpful. I do agree that it is somewhat unethical to "lie" to sellers about the true value of their auto parts. Keep in mind that most of them are BMW owners, so they are not starving for cash and simply want to get rid of their old parts ASAP. I do this simply to get higher margins. If you think this is unethical... try going to any car dealership to trade-in your car. Will they give you the "true value" of your car? Of course not. They will lie to you in order to get the best deal and resell the car for profit. I guess it is somewhat "unethical", but then almost every single business is unethical to a certain extent. Another thing I need to figure out is what taxes I need to pay, if any, on these transaction. That is a whole other discussion though... |

In America you are allowed to make money any way you want as long as it is legal and doesn't harm another. (If you want a job that isn't legal or causes harm to others, you must work for the government.)
Your job isn't illegal and you don't hurt anyone so there is nothing wrong with it. However, if you have to lie that may represent some moral dilemmas for you. Again, it is not illegal to lie under normal circumstances such as what you are representing to us. But consider this, if you have children, what are you teaching them: that it is okay to be dishonest as long as you are doing it to make money. Is that the lesson you really want to teach them? |

Well, buy low sell high is fine, but I find it mean that you tell people that their stuff is worth less that it is. If they are allready selling it low, thats fine, but getting them to mark it down because a lie is really mean. You could be ripping off people that really need the money. |

The fact that you tell someone what you know is a lie to get them to sell to you at a lower price is unethical. Now, if you were just to tell them you didn't want to pay that much, would be fine, and NOT a LIE. Also you are selling in an area where you have to break the rules in order to sell them (actually maybe not, after you buy them, they are your personal parts) But you feel it is on the edge of being wrong.
If you are so knowledgeable you should be able to make money at this without leaving yourself with a bad feeling about how you are doing business.
Change your policies/tactics/methods slightly, you may make a little less money, but you will like yourself better. |

You didn't tell me enough - but I'm guessing it is not legal or ethical.
It's not legal because:
1. You don't have a business license
2. You aren't paying taxes to the gov't
It's not ethical because:
1. You lie to the seller
2. You lie to the buyer
That was simple enough!

I would say look at the reason why you have to intiminate the seller with using your expertise in the first place. I would suspect that you FEAR getting a rejection, not getting what you want.. Probably shows up everywehere in your life. I would suggest you look at what you are willing to pay and let the seller choose whether to sell it to you or not. You really are only ripping yourself off. |

Just because it is legal doesn't make it right. You're the one who has to live with yourself though. I'm sure you'd make great friends with used car salesmen and accident/injury lawyers. |

Business is Business... I'd say. Nothing illegal from my point of view. Unethical? It really depends on where you stand. From where I see it you are buying at a "wholesale" price and selling it at "retail". Isn't that the foundation of a business? |

There is absolutely nothing wrong with buying low and selling with profit or high. On some of my products I make 800% profit. People either want to buy it or they do not. Any item of apparel like man's ties, belts, clips etc. of any department store carry 1000% or even higher, (yes one thousand % mark-up). That is why you can see SALES 75% off the regular price.
The seller should know what his goods are worth and what price he is willing to accept. When it comes to a buyer -- the old adage applies -- Caveat Emptor. If I have an item I want to sell for $1.00 and you offer me only 10 cents it is entirely up to me to reject or accept it. Providing nobody will offer you what you want you will either end up going home with the parts or take a loss by selling for less than you purchased it for. That is the risk you take and that is the exactly the same risk you are getting paid for.
Enjoy your money you deserve every penny of it.
The only dishonest part about your transaction that I would recommend you corret immediately is telling that parts are your personal. That is a lie and that is wrong and you know it. Find a solution, I trust it already exists.
P.S.
Congratulation to Robert on the TRUTH being spoken: "If you want a job that isn't legal or causes harm to others, you must work for the government". Robert is a man who know HOW to think, not WHAT to think.
I can only add, that if you do not care about being honest at all get a job as a bankster. Banks are the only institutions that are licenced to legally steal your money. And if you do not believe it, write me and I'll sent you a proof.
P.P.S.
1. Yes - a car a house a painting a diamond a gold, any product is worth only as much as a customer is willing to pay for it.
2. Even the whole world lying will NOT justify our doing the same.
3. If you want to know how to keep all your money and not pay any taxes LEGALLY, contact me at my GMAIL address listed in my profile, I will forward more information. |
