Michelle | Is taking my jewelry to the pawn shop a good idea? |
I have like 4 rings, a necklace and a watch that were given to me by an ex and I'm ready to get rid of them. I just don't know what to do with them now, and I'm interested in how much pawn shops actually pay you for your jewelry. I'm taking it in tomorrow to see what they say. Does anyone have a suggestion? |

LIke the others said, pawn shops will not give you much at all. If the ring cost your ex $1000.00, they might give you a $100.00. Maybe.
I don't know if EBay is the way to go either, tho. They have driven down prices to a ridiculous point on everything. You might do well if your jewelry is exceptional, or old (vintage), or designer. Those still get good prices. OTherwise, you'll have a lot of competition, both from old pieces and all the new repro crap that companies post. It's also difficult to find the good stuff among the miles of listings by the retail companies while searching EBay.
I'd try asking around among your friends and co-workers, especially this time of year. I sold several nice rings for about half of retail, which is all you can expect anyway. But a pawn shop? Only if you were absolutely desperate for chump change for the rent or to feed your kid.
I don't hate pawn shops--they serve a purpose--but that's not the way to go if you want a decent return on the jewelry. |

you'll get a lot more from putting them on ebay.
pawn shops only give b/t 1/16th and 1/32nd of the real value. |

The PAWN shop is a RIP-OFF! You will see. I honestly think they are in business for the drug addicts who steal from others and pawn to get a quick fix. The man who created the idea of a pawn shop was a smart person, for sure!
Your jewlery should be kept as a gift from the relationship, for having endured.
What about EBAY?
If it is diamonds, you can trade the ring in for a better one of your choice at a jewlery store. Some (although rare) jewlery stores allow you to turn in your jewlery for credit to be applied to their new jewlery.
Lastly, if you just want it out of your sight and dont care about getting what its worth...............GO PAWN IT!! |

It depends on the pawn shop-- some are true pawn shops that are giving quick cash for items. Others actually have successful, reputable diamond/jewel exchanges with jewlery stores and you will do better. First, you need an appraisal so you know what you are dealing with. I would shop it around first, see if any jewlery stores buy used, then try pawn shops. If you are not pleased, try ebay or craigslist. |

Your not going to get very much from the pawn shop. But if you need quick cash its not a bad idea. Otherwise take the stuff to a jewler and get it appraised. Then sell it some other way. Like in the classifieds or to a jewler. So really no its not a good idea to go to a pawn shop. Trust me been there done that. |

Pawn shops generally will only give you pennies on the dollar... If you do decide to take your stuff to a pawn shop make sure you SHOP AROUND to get the best deal and make sure also that you SELL to them and not just PAWN... some pawn shops try to screw you by doing a pawn even when you want to sell (which is always worth less money).
I would also look around on the net, say E-Bay and whatnot, just to price stuff. Another option is putting an ad in the paper or even an auction (real life).
Just make sure that you get the most you can and don't let anyone screw you! |
