Is there ever time at work where there is nothing to do?
I'm sure you all have been asked this at an interview and the best thing to say is no there is never a time you can't be doing something. But how many of you believe that? I happen to go into stores all the time and see employees with nothing to do until a customer comes in., If there was something to do then there would be no need for customers. From personal experience, sometimes theres nothing to do except the same thing over and over. I think employees having a time to rest would be more beneficial instead of doing meaningless labor you did just a while before. What do you think?

I have to disagree with the cleaning reason. Yes, the interviewer I interviewed with suggested that. Yes I knew the right answer to give but I don't like lying. If its extremely slow then you would have cleaned from the previous slow time. And if your neat then you would already be organized. I don't know why employers are always on this always doing something even if its non sense. Most of the managers I just see talking and doing easy work while the lower team is hard at work finding fake work to do. In theory the cleaning makes sense but how many times you go into a store and just see some employee cleaning with a broom .

I agree. I work in an industry that has extremely busy times and extremely slow times. I had a difficult time at first with the slow times because I believed that you should be keeping busy no matter what. Well now I have been here long enough and have completed everything I could find to do so slow time is just that - slow. I have now learned to appreciate it more because it gets extremely hectic during our busy season and we have to get more done in a shorter period of time. So our slow rest time is really beneficial to prepare us for the busy time.

A smart employer would give their employees potential work. I would be additional work that they could do that would bring in more money for them and their employeer. For example, a store clerk could be given a list of previous customers and be allowed to send them a hand-written postcard letting them know about a similar product that might be on sale or offering additional help... anything that is nice and helpful and not obnoxious. The clerk could be paid an additional 50 cents per postcard which would benefit both them and the store.

There is always a solution to this problem that does not involve making up busy work. Busy work just makes the employee resentful and ends up hurting the employer in the long run.

There are occassionally times when you are caught up on your projects and/or you're waiting for someone else to perform. Of course you could always work ahead or do prep for the next thing.

I was in retail management for years and yes there is always something you can be doing. I am sort of high strung and couldn't just stand around. You can always clean, dust, or just straighten things up in between customers. it irritates me when young people get a cashier job and they say it is boring, nothing to do. Make something to do besides gab on the phone with your friends while you are on the clock.

Depends on what kind of job you have.I had jobs when I was young where as I could sleep 3 0r 4 hours because I ran out of work but I still had work later that evening to take me to knocking off time.Clean your desk or take a long, long brake.talk to people or watch TV if you can.As long as you are on the clock and the boss know there is nothing to do at that time or just go home but don't sleep on the job.

uhhhhh....no!
of course there are times when there is not a thing to be done.

you are supposed to just act like your are doing something, and in between that keep saying, "It's so busy!".

Yes. To the best of my recollection, I don't think that I've ever been asked this question. It sounds like you are talking about retail. I haven't worked real retail in years. There is always cleaning up and organizing when it is not busy. That's the time to do the things that always get pushed off when it's busy. I work in an office and it's quite often that I don't have much to do. It seems to be either real busy or real slow. Cleaning and organizing are done pretty regularly so it's not usually a problem of it being pushed off.
I hear what you are saying. Some managers and bosses are like that. I am not sure what the problem is. But you should know that the best are not usually the ones that get promoted. It may be the opposite. I have to play a bit of a game with one manager here. It's ok if he goofs around. It's not the same. If he catches you, that's it. He's such a hypocrite.
