ITMatt | Is there much work out there for self-employed electricians? |
There are no websites or resources available to answer this.
I'm hoping some of the Yahoo Answer browsers may have first hand knowledge.
Thanks,
Matt |

plenty - but you need to advertise
yellow pages is well expensive but it pays for itself very quickly
after a year you should be able to run by recommendation.[if you r any good lol]
best of luck

Most of my family are electricians, self employed and Masters and/or Journeymen.
Work is .. hit and miss. Good then bad.
Even when its good often the General Contractors don't pay draws when they are supposed to.
Hard to make a payroll when even the Electrical Contractors don't get paid.
Check with any IBEW Union in your area. |

Hi Matt,
Working for the BT Phonebook, I deal with a lot of different trades, helping them with their advertising.
The Electricians that are my customers tend to do a varied amount of types of work, but all seem to make a decent living.
Some different sides to the business are:
Domestic work... Full house rewires, extensions, conservatories, new kitchen rewires, cooker installations showers, extra sockets/switches, fuse box upgrades, new lights (Wall lights and replacement downlighting), garden lighting and emergency callouts.
Commercial work... 3 phase, workshop wiring, shops, offices, factories, auto electrics and Sub-contracting.
A lot of my Sparky customers have contacts who pass them work or subcontract them. Best profits for little effort seem to be domestic jobs, but you need to advertise for this type of enquiry. Directory advertising is the best value source of this type of lead, but look at the three main directories and have a small presence in all of them, but put the main bulk of your advertising budget in the one or two that you feel will get you the 'best return' on your investment... ie. the one that is in all the homes and area you want to cover, with the least competition advertising, for the lowest cost for the size of advert you need to say what you do.
Speak to your local BT Phonebook or Yelowpages rep, as we are not out to 'sell' huge adverts unnecessarily, but genuinely can help get the type and level of enquiries that your business needs. We also have huge experience dealing in this trade, and can give you honest, unbiased feedback about the type of work that is doing best in your location.
If you are just starting your business, then Leaflets are the best way to get customers quickly, by doing some 'door knocking', leaflet distribution and targeting certain areas. Speak to estate agents and catch people as they are moving home/doing up their house etc.
Hope that helps? |

Yes.
There is a shortage of tradespeople in Australia.
Electricians and plumbers are in short supply and there is a high demand for them. They basically can charge what they like.
This has come about due to the scrapping of trades schools and apprenticeships and now there is a shortage of qualified tradesmen. Those still working are getting older and older as there is not enough young tradespeople coming up through the ranks. |

electricians is one of the hottest jobs out there, along with plumbers. jobs that few people are getting into yet there is such huge demand for their services. |

The work for self employed electricians is mainly reserved for self-motivated electricians. You will have to advertise your services if you expect to get any clients. Might I suggest networking with businesses and people who can help you boost your client base? Join a local Chamber of Commerce, put up professional looking flyers and brochures at hardware stores and any business that will host your information, consider a website, take out local newspaper ads, announce a press release, partner with apartment complexes and realtors, and/or do whatever it takes to get the word out. Brag about your licenses and experience. Give the features and benefits of your services. Why do people NEED electricians??? Why would someone hire YOU??? In addition to replacing switches and rewiring, consider installing dishwashers and programmable thermostats and other add on services that will only increase your profits. Don't wait for your ship to come in ... swim out to meet it!!! |

I don't know about where you live but around here every trade is in high demand. Something about not enough of this generation doing them and the old generation retiring. |

yes I would imagine there is plenty. Electricians and people of practical professions are getting thinner on the ground by the year along with the likes of plumbers, stick yourself in the yellow pages. Tradesmen generally charge a pretty hefty fee, cut it back a bit from what others are at and the work will flood in! |
