I've found something I can sell on e-bay which I will just list under a personal account - and perhaps open a shop if it sells well - I will be registered as self employed so that I pay all taxes due....
I will use a seperate personal account for all the transactions.
Is this all legal and ok?
Would I have to register a business name, get a business account or do anything else?

if you are planning on running it as a business then you will have to sort out income tax with the tax man, but otherwise you have no problem.
you might want to conider using an e-bay business account though, it looks better. |

No-one is going to get too upset about a few one-off transactions. If you find that it works and you intend to continue as a business, you need to inform HMRC who will start charging you Class 2 National Insurance contributions. You also need to be in a position to draw up an account each year to show how much profit you make so you pay income tax on it. A chat with an accountant would be useful - but wait and see if it works first.
If you are trading in your own name, you don't need to register a business name. If you want to use a different name, you should register it (although a lot of people don't bother).
As far as bank accounts are concerned, there's no particular reason why you shouldn't use a personal account - or even have a separate account at all. You should keep proper accounts so that you can show how much profit (or loss) you make. If your business takes off, a bank can offer you some valuable extra services - at a price. However, for a small turnover, a business account is an expensive luxury. |

It is legal to sell things via auctions provided if it is a regular occurance you declare your earnings and pay HMR & C (tax), if selling as a person you can use your personnal account, however, if you are a business you should have a registered name (unless you are to be a sole trader) and a business account.
Contact Business Eye in Wales, or Business Connect in England for free at point of use, confidential advice, and training if required.
About the business name it is only really worth doing to give brand recognition or protection. |

As a sole trader you don't register the business as it is basically you. You can use a business name on the stationery and the bank account may be called e.g. "Paul trading as PC Goods". There is no register of business names anymore but you may want to check that the name you wish to use is not registered as a company at Companies House otherwise you could get sued for "passing off" your business as someone else's. This could only actually happen if you were in the same line of business but best to be safe. |
