Is this hypocritical?
Some people critize corporations like Starbucks, Barnes & Noble, and Walmart for driving local shops out of business... but continue to patronize these establishments. Is this hypocritical?

Walmart has low prices and you can get almost anything you need there, saving time and money. What are some arguments against shopping at Walmart?

How important is it to shop from local stores, even if it is more expensive or inconvenient?

I'm looking for thoughtful answers. Thanks.

It is very important to aid local stores, as they are the driving force behind our economy. Even more so, many local stores are opened by immigrants (attest in Canada), and provide everything an entire family needs to survive.

Corporate companies like walmart are money driven. Although they are the perfect solution to the middle class family, it can feel like shopping with an empty soul. You are just another blank face making absolutely no difference to the the company.

The question that should really be asked is whether or not spending a few extra dollars and a little more time is worth the moral satisfaction that comes with shopping corporate super stores.

Let me tell you the biggest and most important difference in having a local instead of Wal Mart..... customer service. You go to a local grocery store or hardware store and everyone there is friendly, they live in town, and they probably know you. You don't even need to ask them for assistance because they will already have asked you. Tell me, has anyone EVER went to Wal Mart and had anyone ask them how they were doing? Or asked them if they need assistance? And even when you do ask them, it's like, "Well, I'm not sure" or "I just started" or they just blow you off entirely. I hate Wal Mart and I haven't went there in months. I will continue not to either. And don't think that I'm only talking about Wal Mart because Lowes, Home Depot, Petsmart, all those big corporations who fill their pockets with cash, treat their employees like crap, and that all ends up affecting the customers. I'd so much rather pay a little more for better service.

i have one argument against walmart; some of their cheap sellers break very easily. i once bought a necklace there and it broke before i could use it. buying from local stores helps keep them in business and keeps huge corporations' revenues down.

I think so. My mom talks about how she hates Walmart all the time because she says a lot of time and money is wasted there. You can't d o without it though. We need a place like Walmart, and if it wasn't Walmart what makes everyone think theree wouldn't be a similar store under a different name.

Many people criticize Starbuck's because of their prices. Just yesterday my grandmother was telling the family that we will know she's gone crazy when she spends $3.50 on a cup of coffee. I had to tell her the price had since gone up. Personally, I think Starbuck's is really good and would love to work there.

I think local stores (competition) is important. If the big store has no competition, they can uptheir prices because you have no choice except to buy. Kind of like our gas situation right now. Because of the fact that we can't get gas anywhere else and the people behind it are greedy and the last thing they care about is other people, they can up their prices and guess who has to pay? You betcha, us.

It may be a bit hypocritical but hey I want small shops to be able to make a go of it, and yet I'm gonna pay as little as I can for what I buy. I don't care if anyone thinks I'm a hypocrite, I'm still going to do what's in my best interest (while still having empathy for the small guys - but usually not enough empathy to pay more and buy stuff there).

i think the whole thing is that people don't want big monopolies, when companies control everything, it is something to fear actually, say if walmart were the only place to buy... um...picnick baskets, and they wanted to make a few extra bucks, they could charge them for as much as they'd like and no one could really do anything.
no one really likes capitalism, thats why communism started

idk, did that work?

The bigger they get the more power they have. Part of these stores business plan IS to run the local businesses out. They know we are driven by selfishness and that the majority of consumers won't put the needs of a local business over their personal needs, which is to keep more of their money. It's how our economy is wired up. Patronizing the local stores with a Wal-Mart around the corner only delays the inevitable.

I think it is hypocritical. I know people who do not shop in Walmart because they do not allow unions. But in my opinion the employees of Walmart chose to work there without the union so that is their business. In this economy it would be hard for the average family to put the needs of small businesses ahead of their needs. I buy certain things at walmart because they are cheaper. I think buying local can be good for the environment because less gas would need to be used to move goods. I think a lot of people today are looking to go local for food.
In terms of the world... people like to have someone to blame so everyone is saying "don't but chinese goods" (an argument against walmart)... but really the economy is not bad because I buy goods made in china... the economy is bad because of bad policy all together.

I agree with you, But Wal-Mart isnt so cheap amymore. I can get a pair of name brand jeans somewhere else rather then pay more at walmart for faded glory, And the shoes too, 27 bucks for some cheapy looking shoes and you can get brand new name brand for same or even cheaper!

It is hypocritical, but I guess sometimes people just want to keep people from going there because they feel its their sanctuary, or maybe they just want to talk to hear them selves.

As for shopping at local stores, I'd say it's pretty important so money can circle around in that area, but cooperations also help. Basically you need to shop, well people do need to shop at a variety of stores to make the economy stay okay.
