misslaura_porter | Item not arrived - Ebay? |
I am a seller on ebay and an item was bought from me and paid for via postal order - I sent the item at the beginning of august via first class mail and it has not arrived with the buyer. What is the ettiquette in resolving these issue's ? Am I supposed to offer a refund including the postage ? |

No clue, but I don't see how you can be held liable. Do you have proof you shipped it? |

Did you get a proof of posting receipt? If you did then no i would not refund. Why should you be held responsible IF you can prove you sent it. Royal mail will be of no use at all if you didn't send it signed for, even if you have a proof of posting receipt.
In future to cover yourself send everything as signed for. It doesn't cost much more to send it this way I'm sure most people (myself included) would not be put off by paying a few penny's more postage and this way nobody can dispute items not received as you can check online that they have got there or not and take appropriate action. |

Firstly recorded would of been better for u,
secondly I also use ebay & the postal strikes are causing havoc stuff i sent (recorded) from the end of july still aint arrived yet, but as i have proof if they have recieved it or not & have given them the parcel numbers they are happy, & if it dont turn up i can claim its loss from royal mail.
as u didnt send it recorded/special ur pretty much stuffed & will have to offer a refund or send a second item.
maybe explain to ur buyer about the post strikes. ask them if they dont mind waiting a few more days untill royal mail get back on track.
but sadly u dont have proof that u posted it, so unless u have honest buyers u may have to refund or send another item, (recorded) its only 60p extra.
good luck |

If you have proof of postage you are not obliged to refund. It was up to the purchaser to ask for postage insurance to cover this problem. It may be wise to offer postal insurance as an optional extra in future and state in your auction that you will not be held liable for non arrivals should the customer decide against this option....you could also state that proof of postage will always be obtained and can be made available to the customer in cases of dispute. Unfortunately, if you have no proof of postage then the customer only has your word that you posted the item. On the flip side....if no signature was obtained...you only have the customers word that the item didn't arrive. Scams like this are unfortunately part and parcel of selling on Ebay. |

If you still have the reciept I would contact the post office. Also double check the address it was sent to and ask the buyer if the address they had listed was the correct address to send it to. Giving a refund really depends on the situation. Give it a little more time. If it was delivered to the incorrect address, it should return to you, granted you left a return address on it. But the return of it to you can take some time.
In the end, if its not resolved and the buyer did have the correct address listed and everything I would refund the money. |

If you have proof of posting, Then you can put a claim in with the post office to get the total cost of item and postage costs refunded. This takes a while as they will send the buyer a letter also for them to fill in saying they never rec'd the parcel.
When it comes to refunding the Buyer, You do not have to actually refund the postage costs just the total for the goods purchased.
I sometimes sell on ebay if the value of the item sold is under 32 pound i send it recorded delivery and anything over that i send special delivery that way the item is trackable |

did you get proof of postage? if so take up with post office and communicate this to your buyer. If i give a refund I don't usually include postage.....but it depends on the amount. A partial refund is more likely. If you are still unsure after reading your answers then contact eBay. They are always very helpful at resolving matters.....good luck and I hope it arrives, could be back log of postage strikes. |

Firstly, to all those people who say 'it's not your responsibility to make sure the post office delivers', actually, legally it is! The post office are acting as your agent, but the contract the buyer has is with you. If your agent fails to deliver, the onus is on you to recompense. Because of that, I always insist my buyers pay for Special Delivery, because I then have proof of delivery AND full insurance (I sell high value items). I can then refund/replace in the knowledge that the post office will reimburse.
Legally, you OUGHT to send a replacement/refund. However, as you were paid by postal order, the only way the buyer could enforce that would be to go to small claims court. If they had paid by Paypal, then Paypal would want to see proof of delivery (NOT proof of postage) and would find in their favour if you had no proof of delivery.
Your call - if you sell a lot, may be worth the cost of a replacement to build a very positive feedback/customer relationship. But suggest you go for Recorded/Special delivery going forward and increase your postage charges accordingly.

If you have some proof that you posted it you can file a claim for compensation from the post office. They are very good and deal with it quickly - I had to do this once.
Where did you post it to ? Mail to some States in America can take up to 3 weeks to arrive !
Also remember that there has been several mail strikes and this has played havoc with deliveries.
Check with the buyer that they gave you the correct address and if it was a works address get them to check that no-one else has collected the item ( this does happen) or that it is not sitting in their local post sorting office awaiting collection ( this can happen if the item won't go through the letter box and there is no-one in to recieve it - sometimes they don't leave a card to tell you !)
Offering a refund - well that's really up to you in the end but you only have the buyer's word that it didn't turn up. ( I know that sounds horrible but some people will do that) |

Same as Claire's answer - If you have proof of you sending the item then the responsibility is not yours. However, If proof doesn't exist then I would advise you offer a full refund to the buyer. It's a good will gesture which will hopefully save you from any negative feedback too. |

If you have a proof of Postage then its not up to you to refund. I sell on Ebay sometimes too and always ask for the proof slip. I then keep it till the buyer leaves feedback, letting me know everythings ok and only then will I leave their f/b. you could in future give them a postage selection cost giving them the choice of insurance, then if its lost you have a post proof slip and a come back as they didn't ask for the insurance. This time however leave it and see what they want to do. The post strikes are still holding things up. |

just send the reciept from the post office..they can claim .DONT offer anything because people can say they have not got it ,then it either turns up late or they are scamming you.
EBay lately has become really bad for scammers.i was done at last second bid for a phone i sold.i waited for payment and after 24 hrs i wrote to the person to get in touch.i also checked their address out and it was fake.it turned out they were from nigeria and they eventually got in contact to tell me to ship the item then i would get paid!..i told them my advert said no overseas bidders and i would not send an item without payment!.they eventually reported ME to ebay and paypal!,i told them both to check this person out and they realised i was right to do what i did.which proved that any complaint to ebay/paypal is not always checked out properly.i was threatened with suspension..the lot!.im not going to buy off ebay or sell any more.its not a nice experience anymore and the fact people negative you back out of spite is wrong too.as a seller you should feedback first not wait!.i bought a camera described as new and it was not,so i negged him and he negged me back as a "noisey buyer"!just out of spite!......i would just sell at carboot/local paper now! |
