purple angel | Marketing ideas for hairdressing salon? |
I have a hairdressing salon that has been open for 2years. We have 3stylists and 1 apprentice. We want to grow and increase our clientele If anyone has any helpful ideas it would be appreciated Thanks. Additional Details We are a middle class trendy salon. we have a lot of teenagers and young people particullarly colour work. In saying that we also have kids and older people as well. Obviously bringing more of the younger clientele in would be great. |

Not sure what you have done so far, so this might be something you have tried already. If so, sorry.
Direct mail is always a more effective method of marketing for small business. You can get a mailing list from a reputable marketing firm in most towns - but at a price. You can also get a general mailing list from the city - if they allow it. But if you do that, put in one free cut for anyone bringing in the card. If they like you, they will be back! It's hard to get someone away from the stylist they have always gone to - even if they aren't entirely in love with the job they do. Give them something for free just this one time.
I wouldn't recommend billboards or TV or radio or Newspaper unless you can afford to put it on an even round - consistent day parts during one campaign (people need to see one thing at least 5 times to have it set in their heads who you are and what you do - as long as your message is clear, that is).
Okay, that being said, there are lots of ways you can make a difference at little or no cost. Give your clients a discount for adding their friends to your mailing list - or a discount for any customer that they recommended and came in. Maybe a free cut?
I am not sure what sort of clientele you are trying to entice, however. I would have a ton more ideas if I knew who your target demographic is.
Care to expound?
Edit: I'm really writing a lot. Sorry about that. But if you want to entice the younger, hipper clientele, you need a word of mouth sort of ad. Get some testimony and pictures to really roll it home. You should also do the recommend the friend sort of thing, like others before me said. Nice idea. You could do the frequency card sort of idea (like a business card that you can punch) and with each style one gets, or a reference gets a punch... those really drive home a "getting more for my buck" attitude.
I really think I am going on for days here. Sorry about that. I just really believe in small business and know they don't have the money to spend on marketing like the big guys do.
Best of luck, really. If you want more advice (not assuming you think mine is good or anything - just trying to help) shoot me an email. I'd love to help more specifically! |

Develop strategic alliances - like getting hooked up with a modeling agency or some fashion related businesses. Then do things like fashion shows and the like where you can get media coverage. Also, do some charity work like doing some free perms at a hospital or some old folks homes, and then be sure the press know about it via press releases etc. Before you know it, you'll have a "Brand" image, and then you can build on that.
One of the most often overlooked opportunities for business wanting to expand but who may not have a budget is the opportunity to do something free, instead of spending cash out of pocket.
But be sure to promote it and get coverage for it or it's all for naught. And the best way to do that is to announce oit to the press with a press release, ands follow up with calls to the local news desk at the papers and with broadcasters. Good luck! |

IMO :o) I am an Avon Rep and I do advertising to my customers for many different companies that let me leave my books there. They give me flyers and I put them in with my orders and in with my books. You could also try having 1 day a week where all haircuts are like $8 or something. A new hair salon here in the boondocks has been doing that since they opened and they are always packed. They have a big sign out by the road! You could make flyers and have someone hand them out at the local mall or shopping center. You could do a fundraiser week where certain proceeds go to a organization. Lots to do ... just think outside the box. Advertise a whole page in the paper. I know it can get costly to do that but whatever works .... :o) GOOD LUCK!! *www.happysahm.com* |

Like others before me have said, promotions are the key. However, you can tie up a lot of money quick. There is an easier way and much cheaper. It is using email. People love to get email and if they like it, they will forward it to their friends. Yep, start gathering your clients email addresses and get an autoresponder. You can send out mass mailings at specified times and specified intervals. You can even write them up several weeks in advance and have them go out when you specify. You could send out an email to notify them about a special "one day only" event, or one week get 10% off, etc.
I know a woman who owns a salon and she keeps in touch with her customers this way. She'll run a "special" and send out the email and gets great responses.
Just start asking for your customers email address and ask them to refer a friend.

I just went to my daughters trendy salon today! I love that place! They offer Starbuck's coffee, beer and wine, talk about pampering! They have a little change room where you put on a smock so you don't get your clothes wet or colored. We live in a city of 1 million people and I have never been treated like that before! They have deals with the colleges and they do most of the hair for some of the high schools especially at prom time. They also work hand in hand with a tanning salon, and offer deals back and forth.
They make every visit a wonderful experience! |

Hi there purple angel,i also own a hairdressing salon and i have found that 'Tell a friend ' cards work. It basically is a voucher to give to an existing client to give to a friend who hasnt been to your salon before. The existing client gets 20 percent off when their friend books in! and the friend gets it too. This has proved to be most successful in our business. |

You can look into doing hair for wedding shows, school plays, and stuff like that. You might not make much money doing it, but your name gets out there. |
