Elizabeth | Mary Kay question? |
I guess you could call me one of those people looking for a way out of the 9-5. I have children and I need to free up more time for them so I was thinking about getting involved with Mary Kay. I know with any company it takes awhile to get started and make a profit. Is it really possible to be as successful as they say? And is it the same concept as other MLM businesses where you sign up people and you eventually create a residual income? I like the Mary Kay products thats why I considered it. I just dont want to get into something that I cant finish. Any words of advice and knowledge would be greatly appreciated! I am a driven person and I get the concept of "pounding the pavement" But I did have questions. HELP :) |

After 6 months as a mary kay consultant I'm getting out of the business. I'm now several thousand dollars in debt from my venture and I'm burned out from the constant pressure to continue to buy "inventory" regardless of whether I was selling product.
It costs $100 to join mary kay but what they don't tell you when they are recruiting you is that the minute you sign the contract the pressure starts to buy inventory starting with a minimum of $600 order (your director and recruiter get prizes and bonuses for each "qualified recruit"). But they would rather it was a $3500 order and will weasle at you until you make "star status" and invest $3500. Before you know it you have more inventory than you can possibly sell.
Then you are in my position of looking at the inventory every day feeling guilty for having maxed out your credit cards. Its not pretty. And don't think for a second that I am alone on this one. Read www.pinktruth.com and you'll see that there are hundreds like myself out there. |

My best friend's mom works for Mary Kay. It's really cool. She's worked for them for a loooong time now, and has dedicated this one room in her house to it. She does make some money from it, but unless you got into the actual managment of the company it wouldn't pay the greatest. But she also uses her "Mary Kay Room" as a boutique because she does hair and nails and all of that... So I guess except in certain situations I wouldn't really rely on Mary Kay to help you be super successful. |

I left my full time job with a large financial institution to be home with my children. I started my Mary Kay business because I loved the product and didn't expect more then a product discount. I found so much more. The one thing I would like to say is it isn't about recruiting it is about teaching people skin care and color application you create a relationship with your clients and get " residual " from reorders and servicing clients. I lived off of reorders after having my second child. I just recently started holding appointments and she is 18 months old now. I would be happy to tell you more or answer any questions.

I am a Mary Kay consultant and I can tell you from experience that I enjoy doing this very much! I look to retire my 8-5 job very soon.
I also want more time with my kids and husband plus to do family activities at a moments notice.
Mary Kay consultants make 50% profit at any sale (i.e. class, reorders, internet orders, etc.) and we make commissions too. Think of the cars too! Mary Kay pays tag, title, tax, AND 85% of car insurance! Need a new car???
If this is something you are interesting in doing, you can contact me at my website. You would be a making a wise decision for your family!
You can do it!! |

My family was involved with Mary Kay and was not too successful. It was partly our fault, I will admit, but it ended up not being something we were passionate about. Plus, we were told the only risidual income you make is if people buy more down the line. We did not stay on long enough to find out. I did find a company with good residual income. It actually is so good that I have to will the business to my children. Plus, I make advanced commission, car bonuses, trips, and money bonuses. Just in case you want to shop around. |

I used to sell MK many years ago and I will tell you why I no longer do. I got into it when the company was poised for hyper-growth, meaning they hadn't reached their momentum phase yet. Party plan was a great novelty for housewives to get out of the house and see what was new in the world. People were excited about booking parties because they could get free product and have an evening of fun. That was in the days when most of the baby boomers had families and housewives were quite open to working a home business just to make a little extra cash. Others ran with the ball and got involved in the explosion.
I found that after momentum, it became more and more difficult to get anyone to book a party. The novelty had worn off, their lives became busier with running kids to hockey, baseball, music lessons, etc. When it became a chore to get bookings because everyone had been to so many MK parties, I decided to look for what the people were looking for and see if I could fulfill that need.
I then got involved with a company that marketed products for the home and gourmet seasonings. I did that for 14 years with a great deal of success because I didn't have to book parties anymore. If someone wanted one, I was more than happy to oblige them, but I did most of my sales through catalogs and word of mouth.
Then I found that the baby boomers were becoming empty nesters and no longer needed to fill their homes with products that they were buying from their own "store" to save on the monthly budget. The competition became quite fierce and they could buy similar products, although not as potent, in the grocery store and didn't have to wait for an order to arrive. Also, the company had not updated their compensation plan and after momentum, the large incomes have already been earned.
So I then realized that what the boomers were looking for today is health and anti-aging. I did a great deal of research and found a product that really delivered. I have no shortage of customers because the product is beneficial in so many ways, and they have a 90 day, empty bottle, money back guarantee, so no risk. I found a very unique product, offered by a very integral company with an updated comp plan. I can market it any way I want, via telephone, internet and of course, person to person/home presentations. Because it caught on so fast, I started earning an income within a few days of signing up. There is an emotional attachment to this product because of what it is doing for people....they don't want to ever be without it.
Of course with any business, it takes some pavement pounding, but I found that this one pays out better than any I have ever seen before and I am comfortable knowing I will be with them for life. It's definately worth having a look at! |

I can tell you personlly that I didn't like Mary Kay because they have a sales quota you have to maintain and the start-up fee is high. For you to get other people to sign up is a challenge because not everyone has the start-up fee. I too considered doing MK but found that Avon had more of a variety of products so I didn't have to wait for someone to buy another lipstick and its only $10 to start up. After almost 2 years in Avon I have recruited 37 because of the $10 start-up fee people are more willing to give it a try and the income that I make from my recruits is $250-300 every 2 weeks and whatever I sell is extra. This is not a don't sell MK its just letting you know what I found was better for me and I also found a website where former MK reps tell their stories about MK and found is quite disturbing and that helped make my decision much easier. |
