seksahalyk | My boss is paying me under the table. He has another "independent contractor". What should I do? Turn him in? |
My landlord/boss owns his own business and trained me to help him in his business. He tells all others who want to work for him that he has all the help he needs in me. Lately he's had a friend of his working for him too (which I knew nothing about until he started showing up and staying all day). He pays his friend slightly less than he pays me. Now it seems that his friend gets 75% of the work available. Which drastically cut my earnings down. I'd quit but he's also my landlord which makes it even more difficult to quit. If I quit he might serve me with a 30 day notice to vacate his rental property. I can't afford to move because I'm not making any money. So it seems like I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place. Should I just quit and move? Should I turn him in for paying me under the table? Should I continue to accept whatever work he gives me and hope things go back to the way they used to be? Should I come up with cash to start my own business and then go after ALL his accounts? |

I also get paid under ther table I love it ! Don't turn him in what good will that do you. Tell him you need more work that you have noticed the other guy is getting more work than you, tell him you also need the work to pay your rent and bills. if nothing changes save money and go for his accounts ! |

Find a new property and then find a new job and then quit. |

Turning him in is not going to achieve anything.Unless you realy do want to move. I sugguest not doing anything for now because of your situation,Just be cool and see what happens. You cant find a job that pays under the table everyday.Besides you did say he trained you, dont be to ungreatful.Just wait and see.. Maybe the other guy will mess up.The boss remembers everything.Tell him its getting hard to make it without the hours you had been getting. You never know. good luck. Maw |

Think about it. Don't turn him in because you will have to pay all your back taxes to. I think it is illegal for him to kick you out of a retail property just because you quit working for him. |

If you turn your landlord/boss in you may be shooting yourself in the foot! Have you claimed the money he has paid you on your tax returns? Have you paid income tax money on the money he has paid you? If not, it would be wise to expect yourself to be in just as much trouble with the IRS as he would be as you would both be guilty of tax fraud. |

I'd ask him for more work. I don't know if I'd want to turn him in. I'm sure they wouldn't let you get away to easily cause you weren't claiming that income on your taxes either!!!! So its a lose lose situation. I'd ask for more work before anything else. Then go from there.
*Good Luck* |

You have quite a few options -- but if you turn him in for paying you under the table -- then you you are also turning yourself in. I'm assuming you didn't pay taxes on any of the money you've been getting under the table. So, be careful about turning him in for that reason. |

Have you tried talking to him and telling him how you feel? That would my first suggestion. Tell him what you think/feel and what you would like him to do for you.
You may want to tell him why he should help you. Such as why to give you more work, your loyalty to him, etc... sell yourself to him so he will want to help. thus creating the WIN - Win situation. If he is only about himself then ...
Start looking for a new job then a new place if he makes you move. |

Dont turn him in. Be thankful for the experience
and start making your game plan. Start looking at apartments
and also a new job some place else. He cant be trusted-
but you also want to leave on good terms. Its a small
world-dont burn any bridges. You need his reference for
future employment-and also future living |
