My boss is saying I lack leadership skills?
I have recently been promoted to a supervisor of a small office. I have no previous management experience, but she was very happy with my performance in my previous position. I have only been at my new job for a month and she knows that I am relying heavily on her for guidance, etc. I feel I am doing the best job I can, trying to get acclimated to a new office, new people, etc. It's been overwhelming, but I feel I'm doing the best job I can, trying to stay compliant with company policy, trying to learn and educate myself about all that transpires on a daily basis, etc. Today she basically roasted me telling me she doesn't even see a glimmer of leadership qualities yet, that I should be "out there" in the neighborhood, marketing, getting to know area merchants, etc., and observing my staff... and that she is very disappointed.. I really feel she hasn't given me enough time to feel that way.. it's only been one month!! Is she testing me?

Well, wouldn't you rather her tell you to get your supervisor pants on than waiting until its too late and telling you she has to let you go? I would ask her if she knows of any managerial classes you can take, even on your own time, to show her you are serious about your position. Sit down with other managers in your company and ask them advice on how they run their departments. Bosses want productivity but what they really want is someone who is motivated to do what they can, however they can obviously without going against any company policies. Take her constructive criticism, put on your manager pants, roll-up your sleeves and get dirty. Show her your tough and your a fighter. The last thing you want to do is go down without a good fight, I don't mean literal fight, I mean showing initiative.

She's trying to give you a kick in the behind and get you to step up. People that are great individual performers aren't always good in management...and vice versa. They require different skillsets.

Don't know what you are exactly doing, but in a supervisory position, you should be doing lots of delegating and decision making.

It's a well known fact that workers slack off and don't work hard, when the boss isn't watching. And workers do work harder when they think that the boss may be looking at their performance.

For you this means that you must keep yourself visible among your subordinates in order to make them work harder. And of course you must lead them with your example by doing some hard work too in a way that they can see, when necessary.

That's probably what your boss meant when she said that she wants to see more leadership from you.

Yes, You need to do things on your own now. I had the same thing happen to me. I just let "the bossyness" come out. you need to too.

Do your best and leave the rest for your boss.

This boss is confused. If this boss did not think you could not handle it, why give it to you. I think she is picking because she has found a friend for this job.She just used you. Ask to step back into your other job.

People manage ..and need to be managed..in different ways.

Respond positively. Listen but don't be intimidated. Manage your own way, but focus on the issues she raises.

Get results and the rest is irrelevant.

Some people are natural born leaders and others are not.

I'm not saying that you are not a leader, but she is probably wanting you to make your own decisions (good or bad) now.

Sometimes it is not whether you make good or bad decisions, it can be that you aren't making any of them on your own.

People can turn into good leaders so don't get down on yourself too much. Just take the bulls by the horns and let it be known that you are their supervisor and you want results.

Ouch! I don't know what type of business you are involved in... but I switched departments due to a promotion last year. First thing I did was set one-on-one meetings with each person reporting to me. I asked them about their goals, how they like the dept, what they would like to see change. Not only will you get some useful ideas (don't make any promises, just take it all in), but you will also get a feel for their personalities and work habits. One-on-one is better, b/c if you do this in a group, and one person starts complaining, this can end up being a non-productive session of moaning and groaning.
Although it sounds like your boss was a bit harsh, let her know you are receptive to her critisisms and you will work on things. If she wants you to get to know area merchants, grab a stack of your business cards and head out for the day!
Sometimes going with the flow can be the worst thing to do. Making small changes in day to day routines can be just the thing to make yourself visible.

You should probably listen to her. Ask her what her goals are for you. Try to make them happen.

I found a great resource for new managers.

you will most likely have to train your self to be a leader. not everyone is a born leader, In fact I don't think anyone is, but anyone can be shown how to lead effectively. you will need to adapt your management style to your subordinates level. people made millions on teaching others the secrets of great leadership so the info is out there. try the book "one minute manager" light reading and good jumping off point.
