My sister in law has already bailed on me and my candle business. It hasn't even been two weeks. I guess she just wanted to learn everything then go on her own .. nice huh?

Anyways, we got all of our product from my work. I get 20% off. For our first products the total was $200. We got A LOT for that since i got my discount. Well, today she goes "don't worry about giving me my $100 back, just split the products"
Well, of course! She's getting by so easy doing that because if she takes that $100 and goes back to my work to buy products she won't get very much because she'll have to pay full price .. so of course she wants 1/2 of the product. Also, it's almost impossible to split some of this .. why should i have to take time out of my day to split this product with her and have her going behind my back and making candles and selling them with this product.
Isn't it just as fair to give her the $100 she put into stuff?

To get more detailed. We made 60 candles total. We sold 8 .. she took 37 of the candles two nights ago to take to the local flea market for the day .. just to see what happened. So, she has 37 of MY candles at her house!! She goes "lets just split these 37 candles, split the money from the 8 candles, split the candles you have at your house, split the product and that be that" .. NOWAY! She's going to take those 21 candles or so, go and sell them. That's just not right. Plus, like i said, if i give her 1/2 of the product she's just going to keep making them with MY product and getting a butt load of money out of them! |

Hmm... Tell her that you will give her back the $100 after you turned a profit of the first $300.
You get your initial investment plus your fee (Total: $200), and then she gets her initial investment ($100) but NOT before.
There are always risks in business. She needs to suck it up and quit making demands. She has no rights of expectation in this matter.

Give her the $100 and call it a day. You don't owe her anything more than that. May make family get togethers a little awkward though. |

This happened with a so called friend of mine. I got screwed. Don't let her do this.
Tell her you have decided to continue with the business on your own and you want the product you purchased. Give her the $100 back and tell her thank you for trying.
She left your business and has no right to decide after leaving you with the bag how she is to reimbursed. |

You are RIGHT!!!
Pack up half the product compute what retail wld have been for it, as an example let's say retail wld have been $200.
Present her with the product and a bill for the remaining $100 she owes you.
Or you cld tell her she cld just give you half HER product and you'll call it even.

Give her the $100, definitely. It was your discount that got the product, not hers, and you could stand to make a lot more money selling the product which could help recoup the cost of her bailing on you! |

Yes, tell her that you don't need to bother wasting your time splitting the stuff, and that it was your discount that got the products in the first place. So you will happily give her her hundred dollars back, but none of the product, and after that she's on her own. Furthermore, don't forget to bring up the fact that she bailed on you. |

Based on it's only your side of the story, I do think just return her $100.00 and it should be over.
Ofcourse I guess you too won't get along in the future, but I don't think she can do much about it. |

Well, technically she's entitled to half of it if she put in half. She SHOULD be able to choose to take it in product, but thats not very nice of her.
It also makes me wonder though... why then would she not want to be partners if she wants to do the same thing?
We aren't getting the whole story.
Just be glad its only over $100 and not $10,000, you are finding out who is a worthy member of your team early and that is good.
I say let her do what she wants and regret losing you as a friend. |

Like you said, Never get into business with family. If she bailed on you then all you need to do is give her the investment amount that she put into the business. That stands legal and ethical in most states. The candles are property of your business since she is no longer a part of, those candles belong to you. Just give her the hundred dollars of the initial investment back. If you really want to get mean you could deduct your time for your discount, your gas and mileage, and the list goes on. |
