New to EBay?
Hi,
I have just joined EBay, and would really appriciate any advice on how to buy/sell without being 'ripped off ', I feel a bit like a new pupil in an old school!! if that makes sense?
Thank's

Start as a buyer. You have a lot of good advice already here to follow -- and I heartily agree with your first answerer who says go and read (and then ask questions) on eBay's community discussion boards. They have special 'new to ebay' and 'new to selling' forums, with a bunch of friendly, very experienced people (not officials, just other ebayers, such as the wonderful Peaseblossom!) on hand with brilliant answers. Link here: http://pages.ebay.co.uk/community/chat/index.html

Once you've built up a bit of experience buying you'll make a much better seller. More sympathy with buyers, better feedback history (hence seen as more reliable by potential bidders), more used to the eBay/PayPal system.

Good luck!
Oh, and just to set my thoughts in context, I'm a buyer and seller (about half-and-half) with five years' ebaying behind me so far.

And to the little thumbs-down trolls; it's a perfectly valid answer, like lots of others here that you've also been brave enough to 'rate'. What's the matter; run out of books to burn?

Read the Community Boards - loads and loads of info from sellers and buyers on there.

Dont bid until the last few minutes.... watch the item until then. Always go with someone with positive feedback.

always check the feedback scores, read what they say.
if you get an email asking anything always check its genuine,i sold a laptop got an email saying "you have recieved a payment blah blah..it was a fake!!!!!!! they hadnt paid me.so always go directly to your paypal account and log in ect before posting anything to a buyer.
always when selling list ANY faults,or they will give you bad feedback.if you ever buy any rings etc, check there not from hong kong as they dont describe there items properly,eg they will say
"18k gold diamond cut ring"that wont be genuine!
good luck!!!

Knowing/learning the history of an item helps to learn what the true value and price range something is truly worth.

Some people go to someone who can help determine the value. (bring pictures of the item and it's craftsmanship/design etc.)

Others look it up using search engines to determine the value, and rarity of the item. Type in the item, and you get sites that tell the history. Add in value, and it brings up sites that tell the rarity and how many were made, and when.

If you are selling an item, be curtain to express what history you know of it so that you can get the best possible price. If it is truly a rare collector's item, then look for collectors who will pay a bundle of money for such items.

If you are buying, look up it's worth and value, so you don't pay more than it is worth in value or use. Have a set limit in your mind as to how high your willing to pay for the item, and no more.

Tips for selling: Don't set up a price until you've learn the history and value of an item. Try to sell curtain items to collectors if you can. Collectors pay big money for an addition to their collection.

If something isn't made anymore, and you have one in good condition, it is worth a good sum of money.

ex: the original game-boy, original Nintendo, original Sega, record player, tape player, etc.

I certainly hope that helps.

use paypal to pay for things.
buy from people who have 99-100% ffeedback ratings. lower than that can mean an unreliable seller
make sure they have a return policy
shop around ebay for the best deal.
don't be afraid to ask questions to the seller about the items.
don't be afraid to contact previous buyers and ask about the seller or merchandise they are selling.

you should first get your self a pay pal account as this will protect you from some cases then just go sell but do not send any items untill you have cleard payment with you this is all i done and i have been fine for over 3 years now

norfolkbird2003
best for bidding - have an amount that you are prepared to pay and dont go over - you may pay over the odds if your forget your budget -
enjoy the experience
when selling - always list at the price that you would be happy to sell at - its a bit frustrating when you sell something for .99p - be accuarte with postage costs - beware of ebay fees and paypal fees - they do make a dent in your profit
we all make mistakes sometimes - but try an learn from them - i now dont send anything worldwide.
good luck and enjoy the community
most people are responsible and pleasures to deal with - check feedback but some deals really are too good to be true
