One of my vendors lost a check I sent him. Should I pass on the bank's stop check fee to him?
The fee is only $15, but my business is losing money and every penny counts. Should I deduct the fee from the replacememt check?
Additional Details
Yes - he confirmed he received it in the mail, then told me he lost it. I had him for a one off project, I don't expect to use him again.

No, that is the bank's fee, and they are overcharging at $15.

And the vendor might not have lost the check, it might have been stolen, they just think it is lost.

no, that would not be good for the client-vendor relationship. He would always remember that, and do shoddy work for you next time around. If it happens again though, then put a stop payment on the check, and write a new check for the amount minus the bank fee.

*but...are you sure it was him that lost it and it did not get lost in the mail? Also...you may want to check out a different bank that has lower fees.

if the loss was clearly his fault i would

is your relation ship with vendor is good and you need them more than they need you you may consider eating the $ 15 so you dont have to find a new vendor

If he was the one that lost it, and he did receive it in the mail, I would charge him for righting another check meaning the fee of 15.00 to stop the previous one.

If your vendor admitted to losing the check, then you should tack on the extra fee it is costing you. In the future, this vendor should be treated differently than the others & you should consider sending all future mailing to them via certified mail. This shows lack of responsibility on their part & unbusiness like practices that should make you WANT to red flag their operations as a possible threat to your own financial future. Apply the "one bite rule" & if they pull another "lost it" stunt, tell them you'd rather deal in cash (C.O.D.) on future deliveries to avoid all the extra hassle of the problems this is causing BOTH of you! Good luck 2 you!

If the person actually lost the check, as opposed to it getting lost in the mail or something, yes. It shouldn't be a problem with it if this was his/her fault. I'd deduct the $15 straight from the new check I write.

A good rule to follow is: Do unto others as you would have done to you. If you would want this done to you if you were in this situation, then Yes. And I would let him know that I was going to send him another ck minus the ck fee. That would be good bussiness practice.

Just my opinion
Look it's not as if he's saying he never got it. He's saying he lost it. I would if I was in your situation. He may not like it but that's life.

LucyR.
yes you should, not only for your business but to help the person be more responsible....
