He's right but things like that can be overcome,
Make sure you employ people with references,
People who have children make fantastic cleaners as we don't notice we are cleaning, we just do it

Get insured, then if something happens, your covered.

I'm a cleaner/housekeeper and what my boss does to try and eliminate running to these kinds of problems is ;

Breakages, sometimes they can't be helped. I've knocked over vases before now,it happens!
Just make sure you have insurance to pay for any breakages.
They're not a common occurance though. This year, the company hasn't had any breakages, though in 2006 i broke a vase and another cleaner broke a coffee machine.

Stealing. Well, the most you can do is do background checks and don't hire anyone with a history of theft.
Also, get refrences. Try to hire people who have cleaned/done housekeeping before,so you know they know what they're doing and can be trusted.
The company i work for has never had to deal with any theft, and we deal with peoples house keys, security alarm codes etc.

And you're right. Breakages and theft can happen in any kind of job.

A cleaning firm is a good little money earner. People always want cleaners,it's not something you should struggle finding work for.
Personally, seeing how much my boss makes and how relativley easy it is to run a cleaning business,if i ever get the money,i'd love to start my own cleaning company.

Just make sure you have insurance so any problems you encounter will be covered

Your husband is right, you sound nice....he might fear that people (employees) might take advantage of you

Do not expand. Do it alone. Target people who can afford you and charge $20.00/hour. Work a full 40 hour week, and that is $800.00 a week in your pocket. Why have the bother and worries of employees?

If you have a dream, I would pursue it. However, your husband is right about employees and the worries there. I owned a computer business for 15 years. My employees didn't steal from customers because I was the only one that went into the field, but even though one of them was a friend of the family, she stole from the cash register several times.

You may need to be bonded to protect yourself, theft and breakage, but I am not sure.

I went out to yahoo search and google search and typed in 'how to start a cleaning business'. In the resources below I found a link to a free ebook that might get you started. I dont know if there are any gotchas after you download the ebook or not, but I would not pay for further advice before going to your library and looking up more information.

There were also other very interesting articles to read through. After glancing through some of them, it sounds like you may have hit on a very profitable idea.

I would not discount the idea until after you do some more research. To restate, your husband is right about the employee problem, but if you do your due diligence, get all the information and can show him you can protect yourself and your clients from those pitfalls .... DO IT.

Martin Luther King once said, "You don't have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step". So take the first step, do some homework and the staircase to answers will unfold from there. Let me know how it comes out...

~best of luck to you, you can do it.

Go for it there will always be theft in business you can protect yourself with contracts and personal identification methods for your employees also a cleaning business is always in demand and soon you will find yourself not working so much and having more time to monitor your employees.

if the employee steals something they should be accontable for their actions including restitution and legal actions as for breakage insurance is a must for any small buisness owner

Cybeq
Listen to your husband.

depends on where you live. if tehrs alot of cleaning busineses, then maybe dont d it unless you know something that you can do better then the others. if you are the only 1 in town , great, do it

The liability risk is very high in the type of business you are talking about.

Being the owner, you are liable for anything illegal that your employee's do.

In some states it is required that you get bonded and insured. That alone is very costly.

Day Care centers and Cleaning business's are probably the two most risky businesses to get into.

At first convince ur husband.. tell him that no business can be started thinking that ["worry about my employes work. like stealing or breaking things" ] .. start and get involved into that .. soon you will know that the assumptions are true or not.. best of luck.. merry Christmas

You should try it and see what happens i hope all goes well as they say dont knock it till you try it i think that u need to be able to trust the people u want to work for u so be careful in your choice

he is right, but you need to do drug tests and background checks, supervisor visits. get good business insurance covering you for employee steeling. with $500.00 deductible.
