2 real
Please help me to make a business decision..this is all so new to me?
i recently started my own permit expediting company which took me 3 years to accomplish. I was working for this company (where i gained all my knowledge)but was underpaid, overworked, you know the deal. so one day, I decided to go on my own. (every mothers dream) it has been 4 months now and business is steady but slightly overwhelming. I have someone (a female) who had wanted to go into business with me but due to the amount of **** I went through on the last job, I decided I owed this one to myself. Now I approach her to help me with a job and she turned it down. "I dont even know where that is, I dont think its worth my time, etc.." Than said " If I take the job, I expect the full income" Is she for real? I cant say i am surprised because I kind of suspected she would act like this..but how do I break it to her gently that she just isnt what the company needs? If I even pay her 50% of what the company makes, which is what I offered her, how is the company supposed to survive?

You can't go giving huge salaries to people. This woman seems like she would undermine all you have accomplished. Find someone else, there are many out there.

Many times you have to mirror the behavior of the person you are dealing with. From your description this person is direct and blunt with you! You will gain this persons respect by being the same way with them.

Gently is not the way to treat this particular person!

There is no easy way to tell her that you don't feel that she is right for your company and wish her luck.

Ask her what she has been doing with the last three years???

I have a resolution that may work for you. It would involve setting up a new division of your company and putting her fully in charge of that division. Her pay would be based on the way that she performs in her division. If she is unsuccessful, she will probably quit after a while. If she is successful your company would then have two profit centers. The cost for the second division is very low and your oversight will be minimal. The full idea is to lengthy to describe here. If this sounds like it might work email me at boatclub@go.com . No charge business consulting.

Sounds pretty dangerous to me. You are going to give away the store and still be liable for your responsibilities and financial obligations. That woman had better be terribly good to be worth the effort. But if you go ahead, get a lawyer to draw up a contract for her and you first.

You know what you or others were paid when you work for that other company. Don't pay more that what the standard is. If your undercutting your competition and don't have enough to keep the company going then you have undercut to far. This person already has a grudge against you so just drop this person and find someone else or train someone else. Good luck...

As a business owner you will face these circumstances.

1) Honesty is ALWAYS the best policy

2) Hire her as an employee and pay her a wage

3) Hire her as a contractor and pay her a set fee only when she completes a job

You definitely should not be looking to her for anything at this point. She is miffed about not being a partner to begin with - so could you have walked up to your last boss and say that you wanted 50% or more of the company's earnings? I dont think so... So, in this case, I would thank her for her time and start looking else where for assistance. I know you may be feeling the water boil under your heel, but sucess is not for the weak it's reserved for the striver! Be strong and fight for what you spent the past 3 years getting to... You worked for it, why 'give it away'? If you are looking for recruts, maybe use a bonus - what I like to call a bone... you bring it in, you get a bone... something extra. Keeps people looking for more business. If someone wants a percentage of a job, then it should be a set rate ... but not 50% or more... that would be crazy. How would the business grow? You would reinvest your 50% after you paid everything? What would be left? How about profit share 30% of the profits at the end of that year - if you have been employed for 11 out of the 12 months? That might be a better incentive...and able to still let the company grow.... yet divide up 30% of the profits between the people that have been there... that would be acceptable. But you are a sole proprietor at this point - sole means take care of what you have worked to get to... if you dont take care of YOU - no one will. good luck!
