Monique | Please look at my business idea and tell me your thoughts...especially female head of households!!? |
Hi..I have this thought in my head for a new business idea. My husband doesn't think that people will very into it so I thought I would ask. I would like to set up a store type location and essentially make it all a commercial kitchen. We would have a large variety of recipes and fresh food. The food will already be cleaned, prepped etc. People could come in either alone or with a group of friends, and they will make their own "home cooked meals" They could make as many as they want, take them home and freeze them for use later on. This way you aren't wasting time grocery shopping or prepping food & you could have all of your meals already prepared so on normal nights you can just take them out of the freezer, heat them up and your family will have a hot meal that isn't from a drive thru. What do you think??? Thanks for the input!! |

monique others have already beaten you to this - all you need to do is type in "super suppers" into a search engine and hundreds come up, its even being brought to the uk!!!
it is a very good idea though - better than a maccy d any day!!! |

I'm not exactly in the demographic you specified, but...If you had time to cook at all, why not just do it at home? Face it, people need to go shopping anyway, for things like beverages, laundry dertergent, toothpaste, etc. In the time it takes to drive to the place, you could already have a lot done.
Maybe it would work if it was intended for more social purposes. Have a lot of unusual or ethnic foods you wouldn't find at a supermarket, and let ppeople come with friends to prepare it together. Sort of like an unsupervised cooking class. |

Some basic questions:
Why would anyone want to go outside of their house and cook? As a mother of 2 kids, I want to enjoy myself when I go out of the house -- definitely not to cook. If I will cook, I want to do it in my kitchen because I have all my materials, equipment and ingredients with me. Plus I know my stuff is clean and safe
You seem to be targeting women with group of friends who want to go out together. if women want to spend time with each other and do so by cooking, why can't they do it in one of the ladies' houses?
Reading your description makes me think of one word: SALMONELLA. Your description makes me think of a public market setting in the third world where people in this table are chopping vegetables while the other is chopping meat, etc. Sanitary and health issues will be your concern.
The worst concern you will have is lawsuits, especially here in the US. It will not be cheap to maintain the type of facility you are envisioning and making sure that it is sanitary and clean for different groups of people to come and cook. If a single customer says they had food poisoning because of using your facility, that will be tough. |

In my country, Greece, in Athens, there is already a store like that (or similar that) you want to do. It works perfectly and you must wait for a week for an appointment. It's a very modern place, extremely clear, with big verandas ideal for parties.
They have a big kitchen, where you can cook your food and then you can take it away or eat it there with your friends (who you had invited for that event) The cost is low appr. 10 euros per person (without wine)and they offer in that cost the use of the kitchen, the tables(and table clothes, flatware e.t.c.), waiters, and their place. You must bring the raw food to prepear there. If you don't want to cook they cook for you and your friends . They start cooking for 4 persons (till 50)and they can guest till 50-60 persons (sitting on tables)for a party. I don't know the price if you want only to cook. I think is about 15 euros per hour |

Not a bad idea - just not sure if it would fly.
Is there a way you can run a test on it to see if it would actually work? Without spending a lot of cash? (I like the social idea from above.)
Opinions are great. People have lots of good intentions, but I have found that when reality hits, people don't do what they said they would.
For instance, I put a vending machine in the office. I asked everyone what they wanted. (I gave them a checklist) The majority of them said they would buy healthy food.
I stocked in with healthy food and guess what? It is still sitting there. The candy bars and chips sell out every week.
Good luck. Keep the ideas flowing. |

It could work. People like convenience. But taking the time to actually do it may not work. Your husband could be right. We have a business in our area that actually makes home cooked meals. A different one each night of the week. Monday-Meatloaf, potatoes, brocoli and a dessert for example. You call ahead, tell them how many people you are serving and pick it up on your way home. It's called SupperTime and does quite well from what I understand. It's cheaper than going out to dinner and gives your family the chance to sit down together at home for a fresh cooked meal that is healthier than fast food.
Maybe you could try it with a group of friends first to see how popular it is. |

Its a great idea, but just think of the risks... The guidelines for health inspections, keeping the place clean. Also, you would need a huge "participate at your own risk" sign because all it would take is one person to cut their finger off or burn themself and you got a LAWSUIT on your hands because it happened in your establishment. I don't know everything about those types of laws and what not, I just know people are quick to place the blame on other people and make a few million dollars doing it. |

This is an awesome idea. In fact, I have loved taking advantage of a location like that in my town already. There's plenty of info to help you get started on your own, or you could hook up with a chain already started. |
