One of the best is a gardening center. Since local soil and weather affect peoples gardens a hobby center that focuses on a small geographic area can be a good operation. Another hobby that seems to work well in local community areas are sewing and quilting centers. I've also seen antique auto Restoration centers and wood working centers do quite well. Another one, cut glass. The scrap booking seems to have been a fad. There are two things that seems to separate those that succeed from those that fail. One, the operator of the center needs to know more about the hobby than the customer. (that can be a very hard level to reach) and second the customers need to feel like they are members of a fun community. For example, Julie set up a sewing and quilting shop. She has a quilting room where her customers gather and make some quilts that are auctioned every year and the money made from the auction is given to a hospital. The same room has sewing and quilting demonstrations and classes that are free. Julie sends e-mails to her customers every couple of months and encourages her customers to share e-mails with each other. The customers think of Julie as a friend and Julie thinks of her customers as friends. Its not fake because they really are friends. |
