you would need a food hygiene certificate, for proof you know the standards of keeping food fresh and fridges to be kept at a certain temperature's also colour coded chopping boards for meat one for bread one for veg etc.Once you have done the course you will know all this good luck. |

You will have to take a food hygeine course, and your premises will have to comply with health and safety standards layed out by your local council. I would also research your likely customers and competitors, and if you need funding, create a business plan. Don't forget you will need public liability insurance too.
edit
You will have to look up the council to where ever you live. If you are under age 30 you may be eligible for a grant from the princes trust. Good luck. |

most councils will have websites of the form www.nameofcouncil.gov.uk
e.g. http://www.towerhamlets.gov.uk/templates/services/services-detail.cfm?sid=43
Also check out the food standards agency website www.fsa.gov.uk
Also check the competition - you don't want to start some tea-trolley war! |

you need to get a licence from your local council to distribute food products they may also be able to advise you on where to go as a environmental health officer will have to inspect your premises go on your local councils website |

well youd have 2 be checked out by health and safety at home, they may not allow it cos theyd have 2 keep constant checks, and not alot of people are interested unless they no everythings a ok |

Speaking to a small business adviser is the best way to start. You will need to speak to your local council too. They may have set rules and possibly charges which they would need to discuss with you. I would also suggest you take a food hygiene course, so that you have a certificate in food handling. The council may ask you to do this anyway. Good Luck. x |

I'm sure you're home will have to be inspected by a local health authority. They will be looking at cleanliness, pest control, sanitation practices as well as others. There should be a website for them so you can see what they are looking for.
In the meantime, you can work on a menu plan, pricing, what work places you'll be targeting and maybe do a feasibility study (how many sandwiches you could sell to these places). You have to factor in the cost of your supplies, the time it takes to make the sammies and the [high] cost of fuel to get to and from those businesses. It would not be feasible to take ONE sammie to a place of business.
Try to figure out how many sammies you can get from a pound of meat. Cheese usually comes in 1 oz slices, so you know you can get 16 from that. I think you can get 8 to 10 sandwiches from a loaf of bread (regular size). Then there's the cost of lettuce, tomatoes, sprouts, etc that people may want with their sandwiches. I would package this stuff seperately. (another cost to figure in--packaging) Oh, and then there's chips or whatever and drinks if you are gonna offer those.
I make my husband's lunch every day and get about 7 sammies from a pound of meat. (That reminded me you'll want a good food scale to weigh out the meat). He only eats meat, mayo and cheese on bread. Sandwich rolls are a little more expensive than a loaf of bread. Bolillo rolls at Walmart are 5/$1.
You'll probably want to register as a limited liability company in case someone tries to sue you if they say your sandwiches make them sick.
Good Luck! |
