Deny_Zoo29 | Sell for Gold or Sell on Ebay? |
My mom has some old jewlery that she no longer wears and has asked me to sell it on Ebay for her (as she doesn't know how to use it). There are 3 gold chains, 2 gold bracelets, a gold band, a diamond and gold anniversary band and a pair of topaz and diamond earrings. I planned to sell the anniversary band and earrings on Ebay but sould I sell the chains to somewhere for just the gold or sell them on Ebay too? I want to get the most I can for my mom. Thanks for your help |

First, see what the current going price for gold is (per ounce). Then weigh your jewelry on an accurate jeweler's scale. Then multiply the weight by the going price of gold. After that, look at similar items on ebay. If the items are selling for more on ebay, sell them there. If it is better to sell them for the gold, do that. If you do sell them of ebay, make sure that you call it both jewelry and scrap gold so you can get buyers of both to look at it. |

I would actuall put it all on Ebay and see what happends. That fact that people can bid on it will allow you to get a pretty good price. To find out what the best price would be for each go to a jewelry store that wil appraise each item then post the item on ebay at about 20% below that price. Good luck |

maybe you should go to a jeweller and ask them what they think you could get and put it on eBay and you might get your price. |

Well, you can try Ebay. Sell them as "auction", put a reserve price on it, so that if at the last minute, the price is too low, then you don't have to sell it, and set also a "Buy It Now" price for what you think a good price would be. |

As an Ebayer - I can tell you NOT to go to EBay to sell anything! I have had a store on Ebay for almost a year, and can tell you that John "the Jerk" Donohoe, new Ebay CEO, has implemented changes that hurt the small seller. Now feedback is one sided - the buyer can leave negative feedback on a seller, be a jerk, not pay, whatever, and the seller can no longer leave buyers negative feedback at all! Sellers can only leave positive feedback. Oh - now neutral feedback counts as bad as negative feedback. The fees on Ebay are high. You have to pay to list, pay a final value fee if item sells, then if you have Paypal as a payment method (which will be the only payment method Ebay will accept in a couple of months), you have to PAY Paypal to get your money!! Ebay OWNS Paypal. The final value fee alone is 8.25%. Depending on how much you list your item for, you could pay as much as $5.00 just to list it! Ebay is no longer worth it. Donohoe wants to get rid of the "flea-market" sellers which made Ebay it's money. These new policies have only been in effect for 20 days, and it's wrecking havoc on Ebay. Sales are way down, non-paying bidders have gone way up because now buyers know sellers can't leave negative feedback anymore. No - stay far, far away from Ebay. I'm still looking for a more seller friendly venue, and will hopefully find a better place soon. I used to love Ebay, and I'm not one of those greedy sellers, I've gone back to med school, and started selling on Ebay to help pay my bills. I met alot of great people...those days are gone. Ebay wants to do away w/ the auction format altogether and just have buy it now prices like Amazon.com. There's alot more to the new Ebay BS policy changes that you can read on the forums, but there's not enough room here to go any further. Just another way of "The Man" keeping us down! |

You can get a cash estimate at a local pawn shop. Perhaps you will want to get several quotes. In today's economy, I expect people buying from eBay to be looking for cheap deals; the same with the pawn shops. In my opinion, one of the best things you could do to get the greatest value for your jewels would be to wait a year; at least after the election is over. You never know if the fate of the world will be more secure in cash form. The dollar has lost trust and therefore value. Gold certainly would not provide nutrition in its rawest form, but as long as people care about material possessions and their looks-they will always desire shiny Gold.
In a best-case scenario you could get an air-powered power-generator for 3 gold chains, 2 bracelets and a gold band, etc. You could power electrical tools you'll need to build your own garden-if you don't live between skyscrapers and can actually receive enough sunlight for your organics to grow without them being sprayed 'for your health'. |

I would watch a couple simular auctions and see how they go . they also have live auctions on ebay that might be worth your while . I know you usually get more on those then the regualr ones . |

You can sell them to a gold refiner that does it through the mail. with ebay, you have to deal with fees, shipping, and customer questions... kind of a pain in the butt. If you want to do it stress free I recommend a gold refiner that processes your gold and jewelry through the mail:

If they are truly old and antique then I suggest you got to an antique dealer first and see what they think of the pieces and if they want ot make you an offer for them.
Ebay is OK but people expect to get a bargain and expect to pay nothing for the best..... depends on what you have to sell and if it is quality pieces.
