Should I fire an employee that I saw stealing something petty?
This employee is a really good worker. This is the first time I have seen her steal.

Well she must not be a very good worker if she is stealing. Yeah it might be something like a pen, but it still STEALING. You need people you can trust working for you. PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!!

I would give her a warning first but watch her.If she would steal a small thing ,she may steal a big one.

If it was something little like a pen I'd ignore it.

Depends on how petty the item. Like for example was it a pen that's only worth a few cents? If it was then just forget it. It's no biggie, I'm sure everyone has taken something like that from work every now & then. It beats going out and buying a whole pack when you only need one pen. Also just keep an eye on her for let's say a month or so. If she does anything else like that, then can her. If not, just move on.

There's not really enough information here for an truly adequate answer. You never said what the "petty" item was, nor stated its value, nor what type of business this involves. I would assume it's something of value and not paper clips or a pen or else you wouldn't be asking the question. If you are not the owner or the only "boss" over this employee then you may have a duty to inform any other supervisors and find out what they want to do. If the decision is totally yours, then a few questions you need to ask yourself are: 1. Are you sure she actually stole the item? 2. If so, are you going to ever fully trust this employee again if you keep her? 3. How do you know that this is the first time? 4. What's more important, the worker's production or the item stolen?

I manage a small business and if it were me, I would first confront the employee saying exactly what I saw, then listen to her explanation and go from there. Her answers may tell you all you need to know. Assuming you want to keep her...at a minimum I would tell the employee her behavior is unacceptable and tell her another instance will result in termination...no "3 strikes" stuff as this will infer that she has another freebie coming before she's in trouble. And of course I would demand return of the item. Refusal would mean termination. Hope this info helps.

It was something petty? Like what, a pen?

I think you might want to talk to her about it. Give her another chance. But definitely let her know that you saw what she did and you werent comfortable with it.

I would ask her for details on what she was doing, and why. If you are sure that she was stealing, document it in detail.

Whether you let her go or not is certainly your choice. But here's something that's not your choice: however you handle this, with her, is how you need to handle EVERY time it pops up in the future with anyone. You legally need to be consistent in how you address such issues.

I can tell you that, for me, theft will always result in an immediate dismissal, despite reason. You need to be able to fully trust the people that work for you, and it does not appear that you can trust her.

If you do decide to let her go, try to have a witness for the meeting. Avoid saying things like, "I'm really sorry to have to do this" as it could legally show that you're unsure about your decision. Remember, she has made the decisions she has made . . . it would be fully appropriate to wish her luck with her future.

Good luck with this one.

Are you sure she was stealing? FInd out the whole story. If she was in fact stealing, fire her. Something petty this time could mean something huge the next time.

Well, I'm glad that it is the first time you've seen her steal, and for her sake, I hope it really was the first time that she was stealing. Anyway, when I hire people, I always keep it in mind, that they are not perfect, and that when they mess up, it's ok, as long as they don't mess up too often, or try to mess up my business.

Here is an idea, which has really worked for me, in the past, and is still working for me today, from the moment you hire someone, put them on a "Three Strikes, You're Out" Roster. So, for your very hardworking employee, who blundered by stealing something petty, and it's the first time, that she's done, consider it "Strike One". Trust me, for as long as she wants to keep her job, you won't experience, a "Strike Two".

if this is there first offense then no. talk to them and if they deny it move for a dismissal.
