Should I stay or open my own shop?
I work in a small Boutique on an Island and I design Jewelry which we sell in the store. I like my job and my Boss treats me really nice. I earn good, compared to the average salaries here on the Island and I can't really complain. But... I want to do my own thing, most of the times I manage the store alone and than its easier, but when my boss comes, he makes things his way (of course!) and I sometimes really hate it. I feel left out of decissions and just like a hired hand. And than my jewelry: My Boss took all I had, paid me and put it in one corner of the store and told me, he is not shure if he will order more, because he has already more than enough suppliers. I would understand that, if my stuff wouldn't sell, but it's almost sold out and I really would like to sell more ( I make +/- 1000 $ a month with my jewelry in the shop).
So I'm thinking to open my own store, but what holds me back, is that I feel disloyal to my boss and I fear, that I will not succeed.

well, sounds like you've already failed.

If you want to succeed, you have to have the mental attitude that you can and will succeed.

Don't feel disloyal to your employer if you decide to go out on your own, he obviously doesn't feel any loyalty to you and what you are doing?

Go for it and have the right attitude that you will succeed.

I'd say start your own shop, but do it smart.
Keep working for him while you take business classes or read up on small businesses. Be sure you understand any permits or other legal issues you may need to understand as well as the bookkeeping end of things.

Also investigate your demographics, products besides your jewelry that you would sell, possible locations, etc.

You don't want your boss to know you are doing this.

As far as loyalty to employers, would he be loyal to you if it were in his financial best interest to behave otherwise? I doubt it. You can move on in good terms, just act with integrity and give plenty of notice.

Starting your own shop can be scary and exciting and rewarding.

But you'll want to make sure you understand the complete picture. There's a lot that goes on that you probably never saw. You have all the accounting / bookkeeping to do, and dealing with the bank. Paying the lease on your space, and doing the work to make your shop inviting to people.

You have to decide if you want to deal with all of those things. And you have to decide if you can afford what it takes to make a shop a success.

Can you find enough suppliers?

Can you find a good location?

I wish you luck in whatever path you choose.

Fear of failure has held back my writing career for over 15 years now.

Recently I was on-line, attempting to fill out some surveys (as we sometimes tend to do if an opportunity arises to get something for nothing), there was one that I found in the list that was actually free - it turned out to be a poetry contest.

I received an e-mail just 3 days ago telling me that my poem was good enough - scored in the top 12 % of all submitted and I am now officially in the semi-finals.

If it feels like a dream, looks and smells like one, don't let fear of failure hold you back. Like me you'll never know if you don't try.

Lots of luck to you

I understand why you would feel disloyal to your boss, after giving you a great opportunity and fair pay. I especially understand your feelings if he really needs you to operate. Honestly though, you have to think of yourself first. Can you imagine your boss showing you the same kind of loyalty that you are showing him? Would he stop running his business to be loyal to you? I honestly think that the answer is no (especially because he orders from other suppliers instead of your designs!). The first lesson on being a businessperson is to learn to put your emotions aside, and learn how to make decisions based on sound judgement and logic. If you have the ability (monetary and otherwise) to start your own business, this is an opportunity you should not miss! Imagine being your own boss, making your own decisions for the business, setting up your own store to your liking, and earning loyalty from YOUR customers, not anybody else's. Not to mention, you pocketing all of your heard earned profits! I'm sure you know very well the perks (and risks) of owning your own business, and you shouldn't put your entrepreneurial dreams aside for somebody else. If your boss really cared for you, then he would want what is best for you, and would support you with your wants and dreams. Best of luck to you.

If i were you,i will open my own shop. You have the experience and i guess you can afford it too. You pursue having your own. It's not exactly being disloyal to your Boss,if he cares for his employees,he will let you and be proud that you once been there and happy to your success

If you want to be your own boss and have control of your own life then YES, leave. But first, before you do anything. You must plan your exit.

Make sure you have enough money to live 3 months as well as cover all the expenses of starting your own business. Create a business plan. Just because you can sell your jewelry in the corner of the store you work in does not mean you open a store, pay rent and utilities and all the other expenses it takes to run a business. Will you process credit cards? Will you sell more than jewlery?

Create your plan first and then execute the plan. I suggest reading Think and Grow Rich. Good Luck

Start small. Keep the job, but when off work, make the jewelry. Then list it online on a web site, ebay, amazon, craigslist, etc.

Once you are selling enough on the web and to others locally when not working. Then quit.

To quit before more money comes in, is called shooting oneself in the foot.

What you want to do is basicaly just keep working at your job and then when you have spare time work on your own shop.
What you dont want is to quit your job and then get real jammed becuase your not pulling in money.

Career progression is a natural part of life. You have one experience, learn from it, and then move on. You would be doing a disservice to yourself if you didn't pursue your own advancement.

Personally, I would open my own shop.
