Should employer "have" to explain layoffs?
I work in a what was, two months ago, a 30-person architecture firm. In the past two months, we've laid off seven people; and because my job is administrative, naturally I am concerned about my job security.

Our boss did not inform any of us that this was happening (we all found out through interoffice gossip!); he has made no move to talk to the remaining employees about the state of the business, or the reason(s) for the layoffs, which has left us afraid for our financial security. Should my boss be answerable to the staff for the layoffs? Or should an employee not have the right to ask about his/her job security in a situation like this?

The boss doesn't HAVE to be answerable to his employees or explain anything to them, but if he was smart he would be open and communicative with them at least a little.

Out of respect they should. But it comes down them to not having the funds for payroll. But as of last week company's are allowed to borrow from the federal govt to pay payroll.

As I work in the construction buisness and because when the jobs shut down a lot of workers get laid off if they can not be transferred to another job. The employer has the right not to discuss why or who is being layed off. Now if the employer is decent then yes they might but it is there right not to. Sorry. I hope the best for you.

You have the right to ask and the boss has the right to decline to answer. I can imagine that the layoffs, hidden as they were, have caused quite a bit of consternation among the remaining employees. Given the current crisis in construction, it is possible that the firm is experiencing a temporary slowdown. However, there is no guaranty that a building uptick is coming, nor any guaranty that the firm will be able to hold on.

Don't expect an answer if the layoffs were due to mismanagement funds.

I think you have the right to have a meeting with your boss to ask him if your job is at risk. Having the title that he does, the right thing for him to have done was to have an office-wide meeting to discuss what your fears were and to answer any questions you all may have regarding this. This is what our boss did and it helped us breathe a little easier.

I'm assuming that so many people were laid off is because of the economy/recession. At my sister's job, they let go of 3 people within a 2 week period. She was transferred to another department so she's safe.

My opinion is that if a company wants morale to stay as high as possible in this situation they need to be open and forthcoming about anything that impacts an employees lively hood. However, since employees never have to explain why they are quiting I don't think a company should be required to explain why they are letting people go. I hear a lot of people complaining that their company has no loyalty to them, but I don't know very many people that have any loyalty to their company either. At the first better job offer they are out the door.

I don't think a company has any legal obligation to inform the staff of what is going on in the company. Sure it would be great, but they just don't do that.

I work for a company with about 50 offices and 600 employees, three were just fired/let go for no known reason last month... they all happened to be the biggest salaried non-managers in the company. Nobody really knows why and we just assume it's due to needing to ax some larger salaries.

My next job will be with a public company, I dislike the secrecy with earnings and salaries and such... public companies are required to release their financials.
