you rock | Should i break away from my secure job and risk setting up my own buisness? |
For the last 8 years iv worked as a civil engineer building new roads. Although its a secure job with a rgular income im starting to get bored with it. For the last two years iv been plastering on weekends for friends and family and i have put an add in the local paper and quite a few jobs are coming in. Problem is iv got a big mortgage and other debts and cant decide wether to do plastering full time as it is a lot better money but more of a risk. please help. |

Do some maths, look at realistic potential earnings and forecast this against your overheads, treat it like any other business and if necessary get some funding. You may have to consider if its workable if you have family that rely on you or no access to lending for things like work van, yellow pages advert and phsiotherapy (when the body starts aching) |

I think the key when setting up your own business, be it an LLC or freelance, is having a financial safety net in place. It should cover you for at least 6 months not only in case business goes slowly at first, but for start up costs and to supplement the benefits your old company offered you. The costs would include equipment, health insurance, taxes, operating costs, and any additional job training or group memberships.
I setup my own small business, an LLC, about a year ago and business is going well, but it does get rocky at times. Be sure if one month you make a ton to save it for times when the economy slows or you're just not getting as many referrals. Also, be sure to setup some sort of LLC (limited liability corporation) in case you get sued and to write off a lot of your expenses. You personally can not be sued if you have your business as a separate entity or LLC. Setting up the LLC is easy if you go straight through your state's Department of State. Don't pay some service hundreds to do it when you can do it online. |

plastering is a good trade, and a good earner.
you can even do on the books work or the odd jobs that are not accounted for so u dont lose out .
go for it , tradesmen are in demand and they are always busy.
my friends husband is aplaster and she states he is doing well. |

Hi,
My advice from years of experience is keep the secure job while persuing a passion on the side that will allow you to take control of your life. If you start the plastering business it's a different story when you are competing against the others out there. Plus you are still trading your time for money, living paycheck to paycheck. And what happens if you are injured or become unable to work then the income stops!!! I would like to share a opportunity with you that I think you will love, not get bored, start while still keeping the steady pay for now and take control and enjoy your life with a passion.
Due to yahoo guidelines you will have to email me and I will send you to a site that you can check out on your own and be the judge, goodluck.
Sincerely,
Val

The best advice you should get is to go with your instinct as you know how you feel about doing both jobs.
If you follow someone else s advice you may find in the future you resent them for it.
Are there usually any jobs available in the sector you work in now? (incase you decide you need to do it again)
what ever you do , you have to do what it right for you.
Good Luck |

Go for it! It is always better to regret doing than to regret not having done.
If you don't go for it, throw out all the mirrors because you are going to hate looking into one an saying to yourself, "You had your chance and you failed to take it!" |

Don't get carried away just because you have a few jobs to do. Its a different kettle of fish when working for yourself.. In that trade there are plenty of people doing the same... The work can dry up as easy as it began.... My advise is to stay put with your secure job, and possibly do your plastering work as a sideline... When you have plenty of experience under your belt then maybe you can get a contract with a building firm.. If you are bored now with the job you already have Just remember this. When you have plastered a couple of hundred jobs and the enthusiasm has declined a little, or you possibly fall sick for a couple of weeks what happens then. Your secure job sounds better to me at this moment. You will need a lot of work constantly coming in if self employed. Not just a few weekend jobs... |

i was in a sI'milar situation about going self employed.
i made sure i had enough savings behind me to last a few months so if the work dried up i could still live and pay the bills. 4+ years on and im so glad i did go self employed. never had to break into savings as i really pushed myself and its worked. |
