TM | Should i major in accounting? |
i took financial accouting last semester and now im taking mangerial accouting. I enjoy both classes and the work comes for the most part easy to me. However I heard the classes later on get really hard. I heard accounting is crunching numbers by yourself all day. I am a reserved type of person and I work best when I work alone, however I like interaction with people and I need to declare a major soon and honestly i do not have a clue. Does anyone have any advice on this? |

Hey hey I major in accounting but that doesn't mean I'm a boring person!
Accounting majors have the kind of job flexibility most of us can only dream, because it can provide many interesting career choices. With this, there are many different opportunities out there. If you know accounting, then you know the business language and that's going to benefit you whether later you'd stay at your current job forever or change careers every four years. Also, accountants are wanted everywhere, heck, numbers are used everywhere. There's big demand and big pay for this field. Accounting is not boring, tedious, dominated by men in white shirts or just crunching numbers, lol. You can get involved in many kinds of critical business issues, focusing on areas like strategic planning and management, e-commerce, resource planning, quality assurance, IT or consulting.
If you're good with numbers and you value career flexibility, it suits you. It sure is tough but challenging. You enjoy the classes(which is veryy important,you actually enjoy it), like people interaction, so I think you would do well in it.
And you wont end up being boring, you can still party, don't worry. |

The classes do get difficult for someone who doesn't find the early classes easy. If it comes easy to you and makes sense, then you will do well!
Accounting has several career paths...
You could be an auditor, which requires people skills because you will be going to different clients and making sure that they recorded things properly.
You could be a financial analyst, which is a more solitary job in that you deal with co-workers, but not clients.
You could be a tax professional, which would involve dealing with clients.
There are a lot of options and I am sure that you could find one to suit your personality. Go for it and good luck! |

Stick with accounting if you are good at it so far. You can always find something where you interact with people and use your skills too. Dr. Phil advises to pick something you would do for free and find a way to get paid for it! |

I am a accounting/finance major and if you enjoy financial accounting, then you should major in acct.
First of all, having the acct major, has made life easy for me in finance because i understand the material so much better. Secondly, the major is so much in demand, that i had a job offer end of jr year.
Do the classes become harder? Well if you can survive intermediate accounting, the classes actually become much easier. I will tell you that intermediate acct is a challnege, and I remember stuyding my as* of even on weekends for this class. But after i got thru this class, life became so much easy.
This major is a challnege, but rewarding because the starting salaries are much higher. |
