Signed off sick.. but am I allowed to go back before I'm due?
Signed off sick for a week (until wednesday) but I want to go back on monday to save me losing money. Am I legally allowed to go back whilst still signed off sick or not? I'm 22 1/2 weeks pregnant and a nursery assistant (in the UK)..

yes you are able to go back before the end of your line .. the line is just a guideline by the doctor of how long they feel it will take for you to recover though im sure he would have had a reason to sign you off... you should recive ssp for your time off if your not well dont rush yourself back its not good for you or the baby :) hope this helps

not really, you can go back to your doctor and ask him/her to do a note saying u need not refrain from work. if u go back while u are still signed off then the company becomes liable for any problems that occur when u are working, it is a massive risk for a company and chances are they wont want to take it! go back to the docs and ask his/her advice.

Good luck with the pregnancy

nope you shouldn't be working at all till your sick certificate ends ( wednesday)

If your GP has signed you off and you have given this sick cert to your workplace they can insist that you return to work after the cert has expired, for your own health and safety and general wellness. However, you may be able to get your GP to sign you back earlier (another certificate) which you hand in on your return to work. I have alway said health before wealth, but fully undertsand needs must prevail.

you cant go back to work without your doctor giving you a note saying when you can start.go see your doctor and ask/tell him/her your ready to go back.

Lots of conflicting advice here, isn't there?
First off, I would advise you to go back to the doctor that signed you off in the first place. He/she should be able to confirm (or not as the case may be) if you are fit to return to work. Whether or not you want to go back on Monday is not really the issue. So it probably depends on what you were signed off for. If it was connected with your pregnancy, then it would be inadvisable for you company to take to back without the authority of the doctor. If it was something like a cold then there shouldn't be a problem - but if it was me taking you back on, then I would insist on something from the doctor to say that you were okay.
I have to say, though, that I am impressed! In all my years, it is a rare occurrence to hear of someone wanting to come back to work before they have to!
Enjoy your pregnancy and good luck with the birth - I hope that you will let us all know when the 'happy event' occurs!

Why would you lose money? You should recieve sick pay!

Of course you are but your workplace may insist that your doctor writes a letter to confirm you are fit to work.

Only if the doctor signs you back on, saying you are fit to return to work.

You should get satutory sick pay after three days.

Michael H
No, you need to get signed back fit to work by your doctor. Otherwise, you and your company are not insured.

Pregnancy and nursery assistant are irrelavent

it would depend on why you are on sick leave, is it a communicable disease or was it a pregnancy related problem, is your unborn child at risk or are the children you work with at risk or are you - if you had a "bad" day and are feeling better you are probably OK to go back tuesday - but let your employer know monday that your fit to go back - if it is open sunday you can go back monday and let them know sunday - they have arranged for someone to do your job while you are off it's only fair to give notice if you are better the reason i say tueasday is today is thursday and you might feel "bad" again before then although you want to work - or just go back today or tommorow and take a back seat while they have someone else doing most of your work and return to full work wednesday - SSP covers your pay if your on sick leave

chicabuena
Yeah they'll allow you back, they might ask you for a note from the doctor saying that it was ok for you to go back early, that's what happened to me.

You can go back to work early but really should have a sign off slip from ur GP. This is not essential and depends on ur employers procedures. Give them a call 2 double check.

in to-days Health and Safety, not a prayer, think about it if something serious where to happen, and theres you, not supposed to be there, mega claim

I believe you can go back, the sick note is mostly to say this is the max amount of time the doctor recommends you should take to get better.

I use to work in payroll and i often use to see people back before their sick notes ran out.

adelethomas_23
yeah you can go back but your meant to go to the doctor to sign you back on ...

you can go back any time you feel like it ,but notify employer in case he has taken on temporary replacement.

Gingerbread Man
You can go back but if you suffer any ailment to you or your unborn baby then it is your responsibility not your employers or your doctor and you lose the legal right to damages.

Sleek
Honey don't worry about the money more than your health. But to answer your question, yes of course you can. Your employer wants you THERE not at home if you are employed. Legally, you would cut your sick leave short and just resume regular hours. You are using some of your maternity leave hours now, but that may be idea if your doctor saw fit for you to sit down this far from your due date. Play it safe and ask Jehovah Jireh, Our Provider, the LORD God Almighty to provide a financial source, He will. I hope I didn't offend you, but I just don't want you to worry about work if your body and baby cannot withstand it at this time.
