Single Mom. No child support. My own business. I work hard to provide for my teenage children. (13 & 15)?
I hire teenagers to do promotional work for my business. My children are not interested in the job though it could save us up to $800 a month. I don't want to "make" them do it, but it would certainly help if they would.

They are the best children in the world and are great students. They are the best in every way. No worries. No complaints.

I think if they would do a few hours a week it would keep money in our family pocket. They get the concept, but are reluctent to do the job.

Am I asking too much? Should I just count my blessings?

Of couse I would pay them the same rate as I would pay any one! I would never make them do it for free. By keeping the money in the family they could save for their future or for a shopping spree at American Eagle or what ever they want. It would be their money, but ultimately it would help the family because I wouldn't be the only one paying for everything.

I think it is perfectly reasonable to make your children do this. Why should they not participate in helping the family stay afloat. Our teens work and if it ever came to us needing them to pitch in financially they definately be expected to. In this day and age...with society where it is and such, kids and teens don't do this willingly like many have done in the past, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't be made to do it. We only have them as kids for a short time...it is our job to teach them to be responsible adults...adults is what they are for the majority of their lives. $800 is significant, especially when money is tight....there is nothing wrong with them helping you out...it will teach them a lot of good stuff. If you are still not convinced...look up stories on the internet of people telling about when they were growing up in the 1800's and early 1900's, how they worked hard in many ways to help their parents. Good Luck and congratulations on doing such a wonderful job supporting yourself and kids on your own.

Tie it to their wants. Do they have jobs now? Do they want stuff? If they want stuff, don't buy it for them, tell them to earn the money either by working in the family business or from a job they get on their own. I am assuming that they would receive a paycheck from you just like your other employees. That way, instead of the $800 being payed to other employees, it would stay in the family to take care of their own wants and not be just business expense.

My 18 year old has been employed for quite a while and my 15 and 12 year olds have summer jobs. They look forward to buying the things they want with their own money because they get to decide what they buy.

I think you should count your blessings, but then again, I don't think you're asking too much. The household will do so much more better if everyone participates. If they refuse, then Christmas and birthday presents can be very lean this year, if they get any at all.....also any allowances can be cut. If they want things, they're gonna have to work for it. Just as well start training them the "way of the world". I applaud you for your courage.......being single with two kids.....and having your own business. I only wish you the very best of luck.

You have done so much for your children from birth until now. Im sure they understand that it would help you guys save money. If you have sat down and talked to them about it then maybe you didnt do it in the right way. I mean understandable you dont want to force anything on your children and they are great children. That would seem selfish but in a way its not especially when it comes to saving money and they should be more considerate especially if they are still living under your roof.

No you are not asking to much my parents make me help out a lot for my dads catering business i don't want to do it a lot of the time but ill do it if i get paid a little money

I'd let them thoroughly understand that this is a family business and it's what alot of families have as their primary source of income. It's time they've stepped up to the plate and started earning for the family. Which is true mostly for the 15 year old, i'm sure the 13 year old can pitch in some help. I'm sure they got more important things to do like gossip, have fun, and of course guys(assuming your kids are girls), but if they're gonna play hard, they gotta work hard.

You could tell them it is part of there chores and give them an allowance for it

You need to pay them something. You know the old addage - "You get what you pay for". Anyway after a while they might start to resent the arrangement and then that could drive a wedge between you all. Another thing to consider is that they are eventually going to be out on their own and leaving your business and if you become dependent on the freebie labor then it might come as quite a blow when you have to hire in regulars to replace them.

Ok i am 17, and if i were your kids i wouldnt really want to do it, but i think you should make them.....if you would save 800 per month, then give up 200 (or even less) and give them 100 each..establish som sort of per hour or payment method, and you will still save 600, they will get alot of money, and you can have a reason to say no if they ask you for money "What happened to your $50 this week(thats an AWESOME allowance by the way!!
hope this idea helps

no you aren't asking for too much,

Katherine W
Show them how $800 a month would benefit them personally. What would you do if you didn't pay outsiders $800 a month? Could your kids get part of that, and part of it to go to college or something?

Double MM
Are they against working in general or just working for you? Are they afraid that if they work, their school work will suffer? Would you pay them or would they do it for free? Do they have outside activities? Do they have a lot of friends? Can they actually do the work required?

Ask yourself these questions. You may find the answer contained herein.

It is always a good idea to teach kids responsibility. But you can't push things onto them without them eventually resenting it.

I dont think you're asking too much at all.

I would ask them to do it for you, showing them how it could improve the household and their lifestyle if they were willing to do it instead of you having to hire them and perhaps give them a very small bonus every week for doing it.

They'll soon see that the extra bonus is worth it

kelly
No your not asking to much ...just tell them more they help out with the work and that's more money in the family and more money that could be spent on them all teens love that just tell them how much you need there help and you would appreciate it so much

hope this helps
