helkat922 | Solutions instead of 15% automatic tipping policy? |
I am the PT manager of a restaurant and I would like to ensure my staff are recognized for their work over the holiday season. Sometimes customers do not leave tips and my staff have asked me to introduce an automatic tipping policy for large group bookings. I would rather look at other alternatives to recognize my staff than jacking up prices for customers. Any ideas? Additional Details ok I should be honest.. I am not really a manager of a restaurant. I am doing an assignment and I need to think up some solutions instead of increasing prices or anything like that. I thought I would turn to the wiseness of Yahoo Answers :-) |

Well, it is assumed that they will pay 15% or more, so I don't see why adding it on for them is a problem, it makes it easier to not do math after I'm stuffed to the rim. Protecting your employees is just as important as your customers if you want low employee turn around, and they repay you by offering better service. |

If a restaurant employee deserves a tip they will receive one. I usually end up tipping less with an automatic tipping policy. |

Raise your prices, pay your wait staff good wages so that they don't need tips, and tell customers that tipping is not necessary in your restaurant. Good above average waiters will still get tips for good service from good customers. If you don't want to do that, then you should have automatic tipping for large parties (more than 6). But add 20%...not 15%. |

honestly? Fire them. The reason they are not getting tips is because they are probably being rude or not checking on the table...I ALWAYS tip if the waitress does a good job of refilling my drinks and checking if we need anything. The only time I don't is when they drop off our food and are never to be seen again... |

Pay the staff a fair wage gathered from the price of the food. Restaurants around the world pay the wait staff from the rest profits, not from additional charges to the customer.
When ever I go into a rest and they have the tip figured in the bill thats all I give, normally give 18-20% so when a rest puts on 15% thats all I give |

A sign say 15% Tipping is not mandatory in this establishment but it is a requirement to aid in the harmonious moral of this establishment and *know* it is Definitely Appreciated.
A friend spelled Know ..NO..most commented on the mistake with laughter and always let a sizable tip as he had gotten their attention. |

I applaud you for not wanting to implement an automatic tip policy. I REALLY HATE that idea. And if a 15% gratuity is added to my bill, that's all they get, regardless of how good the service was. I typically leave at least 20% for good service, and often more for exceptional service. I know I could not do well at that job so I place a high value on the talents of those who can.
Have you looked at why your people are not getting tips? Have you tried secret shoppers to rate their performance at different times of the day? I think you have more issues than just cheap customers. There are cheap customers, but if it has come to the point where your staff is complaining, your staff is more than likely part of the problem.
Good Luck! |

Why stop at 15%? Why not 25%. Add the 25% to their bill, they'll never notice it. Why tip at all? Pay your employees a decent wage & the cutomer wouldn't have to pay your employees wages through tips!!! |

Make it a 20% policy for groups of 6 or more and clearly state it on your menus or in menu inserts if you can. Some people will tip beyond that but with the way prices for everything are rising, a 15% tip is just not enough anymore. People, watresses work for like $2 something an hour and rely mostly on your tips for their income!! (And to that person who said waitstaff who deserve tips always get them, YOU ARE WRONG! You may always tip someone who deserves to be tipped, and you may be generous, which is great! Come eat at my restaurant. But try waiting on that group of obnoxious black women (and I AM black!!!) who all have bad attitudes and run your behind off and still leave you not a dime even though you were most courteous and professional. And tipping less because of a restaurant's tipping policy ONLY PUNISHES THE WAIT STAFF--DUH!!!!) |

I am not a restaurant manager, just a patron. I do not see any problem with making a %15 tip mandatory for a group of 10-15 or larger. Just post it on the menu, and you will be fine. From my limited experience, people in large groups leave small tips. If anyone has a problem with that, they are probably drunk in the first place! |

People are so cheap, I think the 15% gratituty is a great thing. I think you should do it. |

i've never worked at a place with tips, but i eat at a lot of places and i think it might be positive to add an auto tip on large groups. this encourages tipping for large groups as well as let's individuals know tipping is encouraged.
as far as alternatives go, you might spotlight different employees on different days, or, if it's in your budget, give a bonus. nothing says "good job" like a card with a bonus and a big THANK YOU! |

I am also a manager of a small restaurant in Massachusetts. I have recently adopted a policy of 15% on parties of 6 or more. It works, and the customers don't usually feel like they are getting ripped off. They know it is customary to tip for good service, and many leave extra adding up to an accumulated 20%. It's the best way to go, all restaurants around here do something like this. |
