Stardust | Sounds stupid, but I need help sending a letter!? |
So, I'm trying to send a book to somebody.
Under the new Post Office pricing system, its a 'Large Letter', in the second weight bracket (100-200g).
I want to send it 2nd class, which it tells me would be 60p.
If I put on 3 x 2nd class stamps, its 81p (as one 2nd class stamp=27p, right?), but I also have a bunch of first class stamps (36p). 2 of them would bring it to 72p.
I'd rather use 2x 1st class stamps, as its cheaper and I want to use up the stamps, but how would they know I want it sent on 2nd class prices if its got 1st class stamps on it?
If they see there arent enough stamps on it to send it 1st class do they just send it 2nd class?
Or, can I put on one 2nd and one 1st? Thats even cheaper, but brings up the same problem of indicating I want it sent 2nd class....
As you can tell I dont send a lot of letters! Additional Details Hmm, I would go to the post office but they'll be jam packed tomorrow as its a monday.
Plus, I already have enough stamps, I just dont want to pay more in excess than needed! |

Put the first class stamps on and write in bold letters on the front....send second class post....then they know. |

Alot of Post Offices have a self service computer, very simple and easy to use.Plus they are available at larger Post offices 24 hrs a day 7 days a week. You simply put the letter on the scale, enter zip code, accept the weight the scale gives on the monitor, choose your deleivery option (express, priority, first class etc.) then the computer will give you the total, stick your credit or debit card in to pay, postage prints out, throw the letter with postage applied on it in the mail box
Your done.
POst Office has Priority and Express Envelopes in large sizes available for free - |

i send loads of letters and parcels, i always just take to post office as they print a label for postage and it specifies what class etc. also i always find that even if i weigh the item etc it always costs more when i get there as i think the scales i have are out. Take your stamps with you, if you have a friendly branch like me they will help you out |

Yes. Post office counter is the answer. I always do this with manuscripts etc.
Do not know if I am allowed to add the following:-
Just noticed name of one of the answerers is 'Lilac Twinkle' - what a lovely name, like something from 55 years ago. |

Hello Stardust,
Its quite simple really.
Take your item to the Post Office, they will weigh it and give you several alternatives.
1st or 2nd Class, Recorded, Express, etc.
Depending on the mode you choose the PO will attach the necessary stamps and you simply pay them and off it goes.
Alternatively if you can get the postage stamps from the PO up to the value you require. The PO stock stamps from 1p up to I believe £5.
Simply mark the parcel/letter with the way you want it sent, ie 1st class, 2nd class, etc.
I hope this has been of help.

Dont bother. They dont weigh each letter. Just put 72p on it and they will send it first class. |

Take package along to a post office, they will weigh package, you then decide if you want to send package 1st, second, or by foot. |

Just go into your local Post Office tomorrow between 9 - 5. I just tried writing this out but it might be better as a script:
*You walk into the Post Office and queue for 47 hours!!!*
*You are called to 'Cashier Number Five Please'*
*You hand the parcel to the PO worker behind the counter*
You: Can I send this off please?
PO Worker: Certainly. First or Second Class?
You: How much are each of them?
*PO Worker weighs the parcel*
PO Worker: First Class is £_.__ & Second Class is £_.__
You: Umm... ________ Class please.
PO Worker: No problem.
*PO Worker prints off a postage label & sticks it on the parcel*
PO Worker: That'll be £_.__ please.
*You pay and the PO Worker puts your parcel in a bag/trolley ready for the next collection*
It's really that simple. You could also weigh the parcel at home and check the royal mail website for postage prices...

Second Class Pricing: http://www.royalmail.com/portal/rm/content1?catId=400030&mediaId=51000697
All other UK pricing is on this page, about half way down: http://www.royalmail.com/portal/rm/jump2?catId=400023&mediaId=11200122
I hope this helps :o) |
