patjoub | Staff problems? |
I just got a store manager job first time as manager. The shop has been without a manager for seven months I was warned by the area manager that there are some difficult staff inthe shop ie dont like change ect how is the best way to deal with this and get them all on my side |

Congratulations on your promotion. I would suggest that you don't waste too much time trying to get them on your side, you're a manager now, you will never get them on your side as they will stab you in the back and talk about you behind your back. Its one of the hardest things to deal with. You have to toughen up, and don't worry too much about whether they do things because they like you. If you try to get them to like you, you will end up being hurt and it will damage you in the long run. Concentrate on doing your job the best way you can and your staff will do theirs and respect you if you are seen to be fair. Don't listen to those who say "sack em", in this country (UK) its nigh on impossible and your employees have bags of laws to protect them! |

Agree with all the answers, but mor so with Sean L's. You obviously got the job on merit, so why the heck are you on here asking for advise on how to do your job ?????
Been a Sales Manager for 15 yrs....and never asked for help from anyone. |

You don`t seem to have much faith in yourself do you.
You are the manager, if they don`t like the changes, tough.
SACK them! There are plenty of people to take their places. |

Heres what you SHOULDN'T do. Don't dare focus on making any one of them like you. You are NOT there for a popularity contest and if they feel that you are, you will get zero respect and they will do nothing for you except let you fail. Set the example, and when you ask something of someone, make it matter of fact and don't expect a negative response and you increase your odds of not getting one. And smile and be confident in yourself. Oh, and never, ever share your personal business with any of them. |

Talk to them. All at the same time, and then one by one. Talk with them about work. Talk with them about anything...
Try to get their point of view. Try to get what is important to them. Talk about the issues they have with their work.
Talk also to your boss. Try to get what is important to him/her. Talk to him about work and anything.
If the staffs concerns are valid, talk to your boss about them, but not telling who the issues are from. If not valid, try to convince a few, especially those who can convince the others.
If your boss concerns are valid, talk to your staff about them also. If not, do the same what you did to your staff.
You see, you are now in the middle, between your boss and your staffs. Try to negotiate your way with everyone to get the best for everyone. |

As you say the first thing is to get them on your side. Although you might see the need for change, don't barge in and apply them yet. take your time. Talk to the staff in a friendly way. Ask them their views of the store and what changes .if any, would make the store better,or their jobs easier or better. Suggest one or two of the changes you would make..The big thing is to explain why you think they are necessary and what the advantages to the company and the staff would be .. Always give he staff the impressions that any changes you have put into practice have been he result of group agreement. Once they are working for you and put that little extra into the job to help you meet targets or whatever ,you are there . Do not impose anything arbitrarily, you will only put backs up and make life difficult. Get your way by consultations Get them to have a sense of pride in the store ..If there are figures of business for other stores of your company or in your area published to you, again involve the staff in a sort of competitive way to be better that the other stores in your area.l Am sure your area manager will back you up in this and give you time to get things running smoothly. |

Are they people that have been there a long time?
If not, I'd say if they have a problem with the changes you make, to just get rid of them. There's no point in making things worse just to be nice to them.
Don't let them think they run the place. You're the boss, not them. They will just have to learn to deal with what's going on. |

1st they will never all be on your side - you casn please some of the people sqome of the time etc...
2nd be clear about your requirements and follow through on your requirements for example if you ask someone to do something check they understand your request and are comfortablt doing it then if it doesnt happen make it clear that you will not accept this type of behaviour
3rd use their ideas and turn make them feel empowered even if they are really you needs for example ask them how they would like the breaks covered - then produce rotas that meet the needs of the business but show them where you have taken their ideas on board
Once they see you are fair firm and consistant they will either tow the line or move on
as to the less than helpful suggestion of firing their a*** not a good one. I dont know what country you are in but there are LOTS of emplyments laws that mean you cant just fire someone make sure you document any issues ans get the employee to sign a copy of the notes |

i agree with the third answer!!!
if they have been there a while it might be a big challenge for you but if they are fairly new(0-2 years) then it should be easier to threaten them into agreeing with you, i.e, fire there a s s ' s if they dont do as they are told!!!!!!
(just make sure you have someone else to fill the position!)
good luck and congratulations! |

You are obviously an inexperienced manager to be asking this. Ok buy some cakes, call a meeting for 30 minutes, have coffee and a very formal chat ask if there any issues they feel need to be resolving. You can also say a bit about yourself what your previous role was etc. Dont become too friendly with anyone, you need to keep distance between your staff. |

First of all if they have been for 7months without a manager, you have to learn about what they were doing and how.
Look for the reasons behind why they are difficult. Is the reason job related or outside work? Someone may be acting difficult because they wanted the job that you have been offered
Do not try to implement change from the top down. People accept change easily when they have participated in the creation of the new system. They feel that they own it because it is their suggestions. Better get everyone's opinion on what needs change before thinking about implementing a change.
Hope that this can help |

Outline just how you want the shop to run , be fair , understanding , but at the end if they wish to undermind you , sack them , that way you can then get the staff you want. |

Find the ring-leader of the trouble makers and in front of the entire cast, punch this person hard on the nose. He/she will obey from that point onwards.
Talk does not work. Punch always works.
To be a leader you have to be aggressive and hard. |
