The easiest way for a novice to build a web site is to start with a web template. Web Templates can be customized and you can use the layout but swap the graphics etc.... this will get you comfortable with basic HTML design and an HTML editor (like Dreamweaver).

One of the quickest ways to get a website going is to go to www.wordpress.com and follow the sign-up instructions.

You have a few options. Here they are (ordered by cost, lowest to highest):
1. Create a blog and use it as your website. FREE but requires creative thinking (hosting is also FREE).
2. Purchase a DIY template and do it yourself. Very cheap and / or don't quite fit your needs. Expect to pay anywhere from $25-$450 (some add a monthly fee for maintenance or hosting).
3. Purchase a template from a service like Template Monster. Templates are inexpensive but you won't be able to personalize it because if you have the tools and expertise, you're probably a designer yourself. Customizing the site could get expensive if you want it done right. Expect to pay at least $500 plus the cost of the template.
4. Post a job on eLance and pray you get someone responsible, dependable and inexpensive. I never found that person so I decided to stop looking. Cost varies.
5. Post a job on Craigslist and pray you get someone responsible, dependable and inexpensive. I've had a lot f success finding providers this way but only because I knew how to sort through the scammers and BS'ers. Cost varies.

I would suggest that you look at several options. You can find a few great hosts out there that will walk you through the proper process of website building. While comparing, first compare feature-by-feature then dollar-for-dollar. Going through this process will ensure that you get the best fit for your needs and get you the most value for your money. Keep in mind the expectations you have for your site. What are the features that you seek? How will you drive traffic(visitors) to your site. There are a lot of ways to go about doing it. Most e-mail services offer website that have templates that you can use all for free. I recommend using officelive from MSN. You can get a professional looking business site for free which you can customize to fit your needs. There are others, but I think theirs is very good. Or you may start with a MySpace page. Once you get the hang of it, it will be easy. |
