Bring Back Mark & Lard | Starting a business? |
Me and me partner are growing ever-more dissatisified with our dull, boring jobs and in an ideal world would like to start our own business so we could work from home, or at least work together and be our own bosses. We've got an idea for a new business but no capital or any clue how to start, and our idea involves something we've never done before. Anyone got any ideas how to get the ball rolling? Additional Details By the way I'm in the UK. |

Have a look at the site below. I started my own business in the late 80's, at that time banks were throwing money at everything. At one stage I changed banks and opened a new account with a 30k overdraft facility. Its not that easy today I fear. However you proceed you will need to produce a sturdy Business plan. The business I started was service related and at the time no one else had thought of it, the market field was limited. To test the water I did a mail drop to every potential customer and followed this up with a marketing call. So any market research you can do without giving the idea away would be beneficial. If you own your own home and have some equity you can easily raise a business loan from a bank , they will ask you to name them as first charge on the house. In the first instance I would speak to a small business adviser, the bank will have one. My last tip is to go for Govt grants first and top this up with raised funds, and do lots of homework. Good luck and try and let me know how you get on. |

First, write up a business plan. Detail what your idea is, what your direct costs (costs directly related to what product or service you are producing), indirect costs (costs, such as, phone & electricity service), marketing plans (how you plan on selling your product or service), budgeting (raising the capital, what prices you will be selling your product or services minus your costs). Also, what you will need to start your business, and how you will expand it in the future.
Second, you will need capital. Banks are a good place to start. Venture capitalists are out there also. Most require a well written business plan.
By this time, you should have a pretty good idea of how you want to build your business.
Lastly, any successful business has the aid of three people, a good banker, a good accountant, and a good lawyer.
This should help get you pointed in the right direction. Good luck 'living the dream'. |

I found a good place to start was on our local council website who had a business page. Most councils can help put you in touch with either their own small business service or a local business link. Business link initial meetings are great - informal, probing, inspiring etc., if you have a good advisor. All the advisors are successful businesspeople so know the pitfalls and tips for success. I'm currently doing an online course for first time small businesses through them - it's delivered by "three pebbles learning" and runs for free and is a useful tool for deciding where you're going, how you'll get there etc etc. Give them a go - it'll cost you nothing but a little time. Me and my hubby are now 6 months into our business idea and doing fine, getting ready to grow. I hope you succeed in what you intend doing - good luck. |
