First you need to decide what business you want to be in. A good place to start is with you! What do like to do? What do you enjoy? What are your goals? What do you want to accomplish? How much capital can you invest in an ongoing basis?
Having your own business is a huge commitment of time, effort and consistently. Once you do that, find a mentor. Find someone who is already doing what you want to do. Talk to other business owners, find out how they got started and what it takes to keep going.
I'm sure they'll let you "see" behind the scenes. Find out what's involved, what the daily activities are. Be their shadow for a while. Once you decide what's right for you do your research. Check with your local office of economic development or chamber of commerce. Have someone help you with your business plan, find out what programs are available for new business owners.
Take your time!!! Do it right. This is not a decision to be taken lightly or made quickly. Get your education first. If you're thinking of doing something online the research is just as important!! Know what you're getting into. |

If this is going to be your main source of income, you need to find something that you are interested in and look at focusing on that.
Many small online traders do well because they are able to really specilise.
Do you have any unique skills that you could sell. Perhaps you could learn a skill. This may be something like offering a language translation service to providing at home computer lessons.

I went on a four day business course which was a great help
Research and advertising is important. I have spoken to many small business people and it amazing what tips you pick up. Look for a gap in the market and take it from there. |
